Who is British tech tycoon Mike Lynch?
BBC ^ | Aug 20 | BBC

Mike Lynch, a British tech entrepreneur, and his daughter Hannah are missing after a luxury yacht sunk off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily.

After co-founding British tech firm Autonomy in 1996, and backing several successful tech firms, the businessman was regarded by some as the UK's answer to Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

One person is dead and six are missing after a 56m superyacht called Bayesian, which has been linked to Mr Lynch's family, sank following bad weather.

His wife, Angela Bacares, has been rescued.

The British tech tycoon made his riches by selling his company Autonomy to US computing giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011 for $11bn (£8.6bn).

But an intense legal battle following the high-profile acquisition loomed over Mr Lynch for over a decade.

He was acquitted in the US in June on multiple fraud charges, over which he had been facing two decades in jail.

In an interview on BBC Radio 4 in August, Mr Lynch said he believed he had only been able to prove his innocence in US court due to his wealth.

The sinking of the yacht came on the same day that Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the fraud case, Stephen Chamberlain, was confirmed by his lawyer as having died after being hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

What a co-inky-dink!

$11 billion buys a lot of anonymity and a hard to find profiles.

"His daughter Hannah, 18, was also on the yacht which sank."

I think they found her....

He was accused of overstating the valuation of his company.

Maybe whoever gets his $11B will spend it on something useful, and not “superyachts”.

A yacht is super useful for enjoying one’s self on the sea. On most days anyway.

Not all, obviously.

Welcome to our two-tiered justice system. Wealthy criminals running free abound.

They keep labeling this ship a "super yacht."

Fake news: It was a large sailboat. A 'yacht' but still a sailboat. HUGE difference. Oh, but defenders will say, "It was FIFTY-SIX METERS LONG!!!"

There is some psychology in phallus in thar.

IDGAF. It's a SAILBOAT, a different class of yacht.

THIS is a 'superyacht' in my mind:

This was the Bayesian:

But what should we expect from those who serve people with more money than brains, in this case a rich venture capitalist 'phallus' who just got away with fraud in US courts (the purpose of the celebratory cruise around the Med) and couldn't afford to be in the class of Paul Allen and Jeff Bezos?

Note: There was arguably MASSIVE fraud at Autonomy, and Lynch and his CFO Sushovan Hussain both faced other legal battles, in addition to damages from a civil case brought by HP.

From one perspective, this was karma delivered by the hand of God.

Who cares. The only reason he’s dead is because he had the money to buy an unsafe yacht in the first place. None of the rest of us could afford to be that stupid. We should not be mourning his loss.

Good post I think you summed it up well

His company value was written down by a factor of billions by HP (almost all of it in fact!!). Very strange the whole thing.

The irony being that I knew NOTHING about Lynch, Autonomy, etc. until your post.

It’s rather interesting how his trial evaded my ‘news’...

Prayers for the innocents (daughter, crew, et al), but it’s also rather interesting how Lynch and his attorney are among the missing, plus this

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/mike-lynchs-co-defendant-life-33497008

Ironically, deceased co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain’s final words posted to social media in the wake of the acquittals which launched the fateful, celebratory cruise,

“And they all lived happily ever after...”

Smart enough to become a billionaire, but not smart enough to avoid a storm while in a boat ... even with modern radar, weather forecasts, etc. warning him ...

SMH!!
