Singer Isaac Hayes’ Family Threatens to Sue Trump for Millions over Rally Song Use
Breitbart ^ | 08/12/2024 | Simon Kent

Former President Donald Trump has been ordered to stop to playing the late soul singer Isaac Hayes song Hold On, I’m Coming at his campaign rallies.

A letter sent to Trump and his team by the musician and actor’s surviving family members, and shared by Hayes’ son on social media, threatens to sue Trump if he does not comply by 16 August.

Hayes’ attorneys note in the letter that $3 million requested as compensation for previous use is “a very discounted fee” from the usual rate of $150,000 per use of the song, which based on the number of times Hold On has allegedly been used by the campaign, would lead to a total that “will be 10 times as much if we litigate.”

“Sam Moore is still alive and a supporter”

I think Sam sang at the 2017 inauguration for PDJT (but am not positive).

“ Those that don’t take care of their business should have it confiscated by the feds to pay off the deficit only after the government is gutted.”

Did you hit your head? Accidentally click on the wrong website?

Someone earns money, pays taxes on these earnings and because they died without a will you think the government should confiscate it? Really?

Explain to me how the government has any claim to that at all.

“This happens every four years. The question I have is whether the campaigns pay the license fee to use the song or not. If they do, screw Hayes and his family. If they use it in violation of license laws, then they are stupid because they should know that any Republican using any song is going to get this blowback.”

BINGO!!!!!

I don’t believe that Oliver Anthony licensed his songs to anybody as he would not sign a contract.

His songs are in the catalogs. You can use them and pay a royalty which is how he makes money from the song.

Same with other musicians. You use the song you pay a fee you don’t ask up front.

During political season politicians start using songs and invariable an artist objects and tells them to stop using their song.

You don’t ask to use them they are published and are usable for a fee.. so they get used and some singer or band member doesn’t like your politics so they tell them to stop using it. No laws were broken by it being used.

This happens every cycle.

The funniest thing about this particular song is they both parties have tried using it pretending it’s about the “other side” when in fact it’s an indictment of all of them.

GOP used it leading into one of their clown show debates.. and I was laughing g my butt off… the song is an indictment of the entire political establishment…

The Trump lawyers have looked into this LONG AGO and have surely covered him LEGALLY in terms of LICENSING and PLAYBACK rights.

I think the family is simply "$HIT OUT of LUCK" in hopes of either getting MORE MONEY or STOPPING its use.

If one of the commenters after the article is correct, Hayes gave up all rights to his royalties after his bankruptcy. So, his family would have no right to claim this. Again, that’s if the commenter is right.

They don’t. So why should the government get involved looking for the rightful heirs?
Paying taxes is an obligation. If they don’t have a will then screw their relatives who will line up like vultures. There are reasons why they don’t have a will and I don’t care to know what it is.

You can be sure that they do pay the licensing fee. Trump’s people would not overlook that. You think they forgot to take care of the licensing fees for Proud to Be An American?

And she made him pay any royalties she was owed to PETA, around $100,000 apparently.

The rights would belong to the person or company who purchased the rights and they would then be owed the royalties.

He probably has no need to pay them any money because either he sold or gave up any future royalties.

I am sure this is just his RAT family griping because they want to make sure their Hollywood friends don’t think they went MAGA or something.

Correction on the singer- it was Aretha Franklin. Family tried to say she left a will on a slip of paper found in a couch. Lost track of what happened— whole lot of estate to not have prepared.

Private event— no problem, weddings, barmitzvahs, etc. The internet changed massively the royalty schematic.

I just hope can keep using the song whatever it takes - it’s perfect message: “Hold on - I’m coming!”

If he has to pay them off I agree it’s not fair - but then neither is having to pay Stormy Daniels hush money to keep quiet about something that never happened.

re: Hold On, I’m Comin’

Isaac Lee Hayes (deceased) and David Porter account for 50% of the rights. Three named publishers account for the other 50%. All are associated with BMI, Broadcast Music, Inc., a performance rights organization

The song was written by the songwriting team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, who came up with the title of the song spontaneously when Hayes was trying to get Porter to hurry out of the Stax Studios restroom and get back to songwriting.

The original title was “Hold On, I’m Comin’”, but some radio stations objected to its “suggestive nature”, and labels on most copies of the single gave the title as “Hold On! I’m A Comin’”.

Released as Stax 189 in the spring of 1966, the single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B singles chart and at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
