Former commander retired Army Command Sergeant Major Doug Julin confirmed Friday that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, now the Democrat vice presidential candidate, knew months in advance he would deploy to Iraq well before choosing to retire and miss the deployment.
In addition, Julin said that Walz assured him that, as a then-command sergeant major of his battalion, he would lead his battalion into Iraq. However, later on, Julin said he found out that Walz went around him — to two levels above him — to get his retirement approved before he could actually deploy.

Heck - Wikipedia doesn't even know there's a controversy about "Backdoor Timmy" bailing on his men.

When you start with “Former commander retired Army Command Sergeant Major Doug Julin” which makes no military sense, it is a dumb statement.
A CSM is not a former commander.
This blockhead is a real blowhard. Even lied about where he served, talking about the weapon he carried in war. What a sleaze bucket. A nasty little weasel.
Folksy Comrade Walz: See ya’ later, guys. I am outta here. Send me a post card if you don’t get shot or blown up by an IED. I have a plane to catch.
You really have to wonder if these people have editors. I heard what Kinzinger had to say, and he kept calling Walz a "Chief Master Sergeant". Apparently, Kinzinger isn't aware that rank doesn't exist in the Army.
It really isn't asking must to at least expect these people to get ranks correct. Especially Kinzinger.
In one photo, Walz is wearing a camo hat bearing the U.S. Army Special Forces crest. Walz was never a member of the Special Forces. Wearing a hat in support of such a prestigious organization is frowned upon within military veteran circles.
Of course he knew. At that time it would have been rare to not have months notice ahead of time.
aren’t there horses in Iraq?
Having known various Nat’l Guard folks...you know the unit ‘travel-schedule’ a minimum of six months, and usually on up to twelve. As for effect? Well...if he intended to run for office in the next year, a deployment of 12 months screws up that career goal.
I would imagine if you surveyed this whole era...there were probably 40 individuals a year who retired-out because of political timing for elections. No one ever asks about this topic.
If you find such a photo it would be damning.
I can’t make out the patch, has anyone isolated the patch only?
Realistically nobody can blame him for not wanting to fight in Bush’s war. This is just political posturing by the Republicans.
There would be a lot less of an issue if Walz handled this like a decent human being.
What does that mean?
(1) Tell your men in advance that you are going to retire. Look them in the eye. Shake their hand. Tell them it was an honor to serve with them.
(2) Tell you commanding officer you are going to submit request for retirement papers. Ask for their support with the paperwork. Look them in the eye. Shake their hand. Tell them it was an honor to serve with them.
That is what normal human beings do.
Walz skipped those steps—because he is a creep and a coward.
Notwithstanding his “stolen valor” issues, I think we should admire him not fighting in Bush’s unjust war. I feel citizens have no obligation to fight in a war where the interests of the USA are not at stake.
agree
I am a retired reservist. 21 years. I know.
