Nixon’s Youngest Lawyer Reflects on Watergate 50 Years Later: “It Ended Up a Coup”
New American ^ | August 8, 2024 ( August 9, 2024 ) | Andrew Muller

Richard Nixon, America’s 37th President, resigned his office on August 9, 1974, in the wake of the Watergate scandal. Considering the 50th anniversary of Nixon’s resignation on August 9, 2024, Geoff Shepard, a Nixon White House official and the youngest lawyer to serve on Nixon’s Watergate defense team, reflected on the rise and fall of the president in an intimate exclusive interview with Andrew Muller for The New American magazine.

Shepard, who also personally transcribed the Nixon tapes and ran the White House document room, said the legal attacks against Nixon and his people “ended up a coup.”

“I didn’t have a front-row seat,” reflected Shepard, the author of The Real Watergate Scandal. “I was on the stage during the unfolding of the crisis.” Despite many of his colleagues being indicted, prosecuted, and imprisoned, Shepard is the only member of the White House staff to have a letter of clearance from the special prosecutor.

After leaving D.C. to pursue a career as a lawyer in the insurance industry, Shepard discovered in 2003 that all the records of the Watergate special prosecution force are held by the National Archives. Receiving credentials to view the documents, Shepard discovered what he called a “secret cabal of all senior officials, of all three branches of government, who were secretly meeting and secretly coordinating their attacks on the Nixon administration.” The specially recruited group of 100 federal characters, including 60 lawyers, were so eager to “get Nixon’s and his people” that they “cheated,” Shepard shared.

Shepard’s research also uncovered written memoranda that prove at least ten separate illegal secret meetings with federal prosecutors and Judge John Sirica, who presided over the Watergate coverup and burglary trial. The federal prosecutors also met secretly with Judge Gerhard Gesell, who presided over the White House Special...

That's SOP these days.

Yeah, me too, I watched the video and realized we all had the wool pulled over our eyes.. the New York Times, and the 3 large networks, worked hard to keep us all in the dark. Finally the truth comes out.

My parents told me this deep state stuff at the time.

Said it was payback for Alger Hiss and because they had nothing on him to control him.

History will judge Nixon mainly for two things that did not involve Watergate: Aiding and abetting the creation of OPEC when he could have stopped it and continuing the Vietnam war for several years after it should have been stopped.

If there are never negative consequences to using lawfare to oust their enemies it will never stop. The dems embrace this tactic, and the Republicans basically endorse it by not vigorously going after the guilty. Remember, the left will tell any lie and break any law in the furtherance of the quest for total control.

Of course related to OPEC—Nixon decoupled the dollar from gold and created the Petro-dollar.

Short term it made him look good—and left future generations to feel the negative consequences.

The EPA was the same thing—helped solved the “burning river” problem but ultimately saddled the country with a brutal and hateful bureaucracy that harmed the economy and hurt the “little guy” more than any foreign enemy could.

The MSM is America’s #1 enemy.

They instituted a coup with Nixon and they tried it against Trump. And... they instituted a coup against Biden for that matter... one week after everyone in the MSM was saying Joey was ‘sharp as a tack’ and anyone claiming otherwise is lying and using AI ‘deep fakes’.

History will judge Nixon mainly for his

1) imperialist approach to his presidency

2) nonsensical and disastrous wage and price controls

3) creation of the utterly unconstitutional and disastrous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Nixon was a RINO - politics first, America second.

Nixon was forced to resign for a ‘crime’ which in today’s political environment would amount to jaywalking, in comparison.

Russia/Russia/Russia was thousands of times more egregious, and nothing came of it.

Actually I got to vote for President Nixon in 1972 and have never regretted it.   I knew that he was against Communism and they took him out because of that.   McGovern was as pink as could be.

Watergate was always without substance.

The public version of Watergate was without substance.

Behind the scenes there was a lot going on—and those who wish to dig deep can learn a lot about it.

The best way to understand Watergate is to recognize we have a lying, thieving cabal manipulating everything and giving us fake news.

The reason Nixon was willing to step down for a nothingburger likely had to do with being blackmailed for his involvement in what happened at Dealey Plaza a decade earlier.

I don’t think Nixon was involved in the JFK assassination.

I am convinced this is all about Howard Hughes and his bagman Maheu.

They were definitely paying bribes to Nixon over the years.

Now Maheu was involved in the Castro assassination plots and the (later) RFK assassination—so it is certainly possible that Maheu had some role in the JFK assassination—but I have not specific evidence for that.

The “Bay of Pigs thing” that Nixon referred to in the tapes was probably the Castro assassination attempts imho.

Remember at that time the CIA/Mob connection was a tightly held secret.

Well, I think I should be careful with this, because we only want the truth to be known after so many lies.

I’m not stating Nixon was involved in the assassination.

But I do believe he was neck-deep in cabal operations, going back to Project Paperclip. Maybe it was only coincidence Nixon was in Dallas the morning of the JFK assassination.

But whatever dirt there was on Nixon, from his various histories, were likely the reason Nixon agreed to step down.
