I’m starting to understand. An oral contact is not legally binding, but the military is one of the last workplaces where one’s word is their bond. Especially about something this potentially serious. His superior officer was depending on him, because apparently he indicated he would be available.

Walz never deployed.

My hero! Because only the police and military should have guns. Especially military people who are issued guns but retire so that they don't have to carry those guns to war! Way to go ya wanker Walz!

A CSM doesn't do a whole lot of fire and maneuver on the battlefield unless the unit is is serious trouble. However, his mere presence on the field of battle is reassuring for the soldiers in his battalion.

Everything about Walz needs to be understand in full context.

He lies—a lot. He hates the “little guy”.

He is a bad leader who does not care about people he leads—whether the soldiers who served under him or the citizens who got burned out in Minneapolis or the businesses who had to close because of his fanatical Covid restrictions.

A CSM can be a valuable asset to the commander, if he fits the image of top soldeir and has warrior values. I’ve seen too far too many that were simply “yes men”, political, and out for their own gain. I’ve seen more than a few that didn’t think the rules applied to them. That was my experience based on 15 years service at brigade, battalion, and company level.

Walz has long-billed himself as a retired Command Sergeant Major —
when in reality he was demoted to the lower rank of master sergeant.


Did Walz collect retirement pay as a Command Sergeant
Major — or as the lower ranked master sergeant?

Remember Sergeant Major Plumley?

Now, there was a Sergeant Major.

Walz is a self-serving son of a bitch.

He doesn’t even deserve to be called a Soldier.

I have known Sergeants Major.

Walz was never a Sergeant Major and could never be a real one.

Ha! I made that same reference on Wednesday!


And it's not like they were abandoned by a fellow troop; Walz was supposed to be their Command Sergeant Major. He was supposed to be the ranking non-commissioned officer in the unit.

Walz was supposed to be the Sam Elliott to Mel Gibson in the movie We Were Soldiers, but he quit when he found out his unit was scheduled to deploy to Iraq.

Based on the slimy politicians that we elect (and re-elect) I think you’re overstating the public’s capacity for evaluating candidates and voting on any basis of merit. We tend to vote based on other unrelated reasons. Just sayin’.

The military does own you and orders are orders. Etc.

I was USNR and served on active duty longer than the two year requirement. And of course was subject to being called up after that. Those who accept the situation and make the most of it seem to gain from the experience IMHO.

An oral contract is just as legally binding as a written contract. Telling one's commander that one will deploy is not a contract. It may not be honorable, but Walz neither made, nor broke, a contract. He may have earned a Blue Falcon award - perhaps the Atropia Campaign Medal.
