Just trying to “walk it back” - up a perpendicular cliff face and into a 100-mph headwind.
While the National Guard in every state does give an opportunity for many to serve as a ready reserve, the real test comes when they are mobilized for a war zone. Almost every able-bodied reservist answers the call, but there are always a few who flake out and scramble for a refuge, no matter the consequences, which may or may not be realized for years.
Deserters used to be shot.

I was on active duty from 1963 to 1970 during Vietbam War. Never went there. Would never
EVER
claim to be a Vietnam vet!
