new class action lawsuit has been filed against Jerico Pictures Inc., also known as National Public Data, alleging a massive data breach that exposed the personal details of nearly 3 billion people.

The complaint, submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, details an incident on April 8, where a hacker group called USDoD allegedly released a database labeled "National Public Data" on a dark web forum. The group claimed this database contained sensitive information from 2.9 billion individuals and attempted to sell it for $3.5 million.

I so look forward to the 27th offer of free credit report monitoring for a year. That really soothes my anger.

I can envision this becoming such a problem that the fedgov will institute a complete overhaul of the system, giving everyone new numbers, and using the ensuing chaos to whip up millions of extra Democrat ballots.
J13 made me paranoid.

Only Americans have SSN. There are not 2.9 billion Americans.

The US population is only 340 million. They don’t call the SSN numbers in other countries. So I would tag this one as bogus.

Yup! Seems we get them weekly now. On the other hand, if they see my assets(?) they might add to my account.

That’s every man, woman, child, and surviving infant in the US plus who else?

Names. I want to see a list of names. And countries.

These kinds of crimes should result in many in prison - beginning not with the hackers (they need to be hanged), but with this company - that had this stockpile of illegally-obtained data.

Seems to me that this is all the proof anyone should need that voluntarily accepting a slavery ID number is a poor choice.

If someone steals your identity off the dark web and takes out a loan in your name, I would recommend getting a lawyer and suing the lender. There is basically nothing else you can do. You can’t go after the ‘dark web’ and it takes a lot of work to fix your credit record with the bureaus.

Sue the lender and go for punitive awards as well as compensation.
Nothing is going to stop electronic creditors for giving credit willy-nilly without doing due diligence about their debtor’s identities until they start getting hit where it hurts.

I don’t think there are enough digits in a SSN to represent 2.9 billion unique numbers.

I had to look that up. The 9 digits in a SS number can form 3,265,920 different numbers.

Today’s stupid headlines have little or nothing to do with the articles they “head”. They are written by DEI hires who don’t write the articles.

Yep, in Canada it’s a social insurance number (or SIN number, so I have sinned *** *** *** times (go for it, hackers).

Presumably the billions of numbers include several different countries with slightly different names for what is essentially the same sort of I.D. number.

“The US population is only 340 million. They don’t call the SSN numbers in other countries. So I would tag this one as bogus.”

A couple of my half-dozen credit monitoring agencies sent me alerts yesterday, which showed my info on this “National Public Data” site.

We’re offering a can coozie and an insulated oven mit, too. Will also throw in a pen with the name and phone number of a random insurance agent.

Article doesn’t say there is.
