Trump Elevates False, Fringe Attacks on Harris to Center of His Campaign
NY Times ^ | Aug 1,2024 | Ken Bensinger

When former President Donald J. Trump questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity on Wednesday, he lifted a longstanding and false line of attack from the fringes of political discourse to the very center of a presidential campaign.

For years, rivals and critics have lodged accusations that Ms. Harris shifts her personal identity to her political advantage, and that she is, in fact, not who she claims to be. Those attacks, based on falsehoods, misinformation and conspiratorial notions, have increased dramatically in the week and a half since she emerged as the Democrats’ all-but-certain standard-bearer.

Just hours after President Biden announced that he would not seek a second term, the right-wing agitator Laura Loomer posted on the social media site X that Ms. Harris “pretends to be black” as part of what she called a “delusional, Democrat DEI quota.”

Regardless of how Harris “identifies”, the reality is that she - like Obama - has no connection to the American black experience. Ridiculous that blacks would embrace her over her twenty-five percent Jamaican “blackness”.

I have seen no reporting about her relationship with her “black” father, other than when he was offended that she linked marijuana use with her Jamaican heritage. Would be curious to know whether she spent much time with him, as it seems like the connection to her mother’s Indian side is much stronger.

It also has a side benefit of angering Indian-Americans against Harris.

If she lived in Canada for about five years when she was a child because her parent worked in Canada, how is that an issue?

Her mother is Indian. How is Harris not Indian? Her father is Black. How is she not Black? She cannot be both? And if she mentions her heritage from one parent is she required to mention her heritage from the other parent in the same discussion?

I have a friend who dad is from Egypt and her mother is from Sweden. Sometimes people will ask about the origin of her last name and she says her dad is Egyptian. Does that mean she’s not also Swedish? This is just so dumb.

“ Harris pretends to be black.

The news media pretends to be journalists.”

And in their world, men get to pretend to be women, women get to pretend to be men, and anyone can pretend to be an animal.

For people who would vote for her because ‘she’s black’ it’s over.
Now it’s because orange man bad and Republicans are weird and don’t like cat ladies?
Now we wait for the DNC convention to see the next hand.

Add to the end of the second line “which makes it editorializing and not bona-fide journalism”

I honestly don’t understand your point here ...

Yes, Kamala IS 1/2 Indian, she is also mixed race/Jamaican/black but she has often focused on only one part of this heritage... why?

... for convenience, historical significance, pandering, “points”? Obama did the same thing, negating the white side of his family almost entirely. That’s the point Trump & others have been making.

As a (very) mixed-race person, I mostly identify as Native American, but when asked, I usually say something along the lines of “I’m a mutt”. It’s likely I have more black heritage than Kamala (& possibly Obama) but I do not call myself “black” and ignore everything else.

She lived in Canada for at least 7 years, age 12 to 19 and more than likely, another four years while attending Howard in DC for four years. Most voters are unaware of it.

The problem for Kamala is that she likes to use the race card, which she even used against Biden, I.e., “I was that little girl.” She makes it sound like she spent her time in the Oakland hood and was bused to white schools as part of integration. She left Oakland at age 6 or 7 and headed to Urbana, Illinois with her newly divorced mother. And then they moved to Canada when Kamala was 12. Despite affecting a black ghetto accent, Kamala is not down with the struggle. Moreover, for most of her political career, she touted her Indian heritage.

So Kamala is a manufactured “black” who is not authentic. She is also married to a white Jewish man. Is it any wonder that Harris couldn’t garner any black support in the 2020 primary? Being raised in Canada raises a host of issues, including the status of her mother and herself. Remember the hoops Ted Cruz had to jump thru?

What is the “American black experience”?

I guess I should have said “African-American” experience, as the population that shares a history of slavery, Jim Crow, etc. in the United States of America. Harris’ black lineage is Jamaican, so like Obama, she isn’t actually “African-American”.
