The University of California is expecting its most diverse class ever.
Data for student admissions released Wednesday shows the number of Latino and African-American students has increased, and the fall 2024 class of first-year students is at an all-time high.
"When you graduate and go out into the world, they're going to be reacting with students who may see the world differently than them," said Gary Clark, the associative vice chancellor for UCLA enrollment management.
"And I think it's important for them to have that experience as an undergraduate, to be well-prepared for whatever comes next."
Race and ethnicity are only part of the incoming diversity. The data also shows growth in the number of students admitted from low-income backgrounds -- close to 41%. The percentage of first-generation students grew to 43%. Gender identity was included in the data for the first time, and it showed about 5% of admitted students identify as nonbinary or transgender or choose not to disclose.
"I think it's important for different ideas to be bouncing around a room like that," said Dexter Mack, an undergrad researcher at UCLA and a student at Santa Monica College. "If it's all the same thing and a stagnant ideal, you have this like cult ideology, nothing else is different. So, I think different is good."

Hey Dexter. How many of the cohort are wearing MAGA hats, Yalkukas, and neck crosses in these “diverse” classes? How many conservative republican professors?
I would love to see the break down by ethnicity and ‘gender’ of these graduates. But we never will.

Let it be known to future generations that the obsession with race and diversity - and hatred for founders - is what destroyed this once great nation.

While everyone else was complaining about the diversity part, I see the claim that it is the largest class ever.
There is no way that there are more students enrolling in the California college system then 10 or more years ago. The article of course never mention the quantity of students.
Actually I would argue it was the 19th Amendment followed hard on by the invention of television which destroyed the nation. Take away the 19A and TV, then you have no DEI movement.

Well I look like an ass. After posting, I looked for the university data. Turns out the US is growing by leaps and bounds.
2003 enrollment: 203,803
2013 enrollment: 238,699
2013 enrollment: 295,573
Where are they getting all of those students from? 76 per cent come from California.
10 campuses across the state, about the number as Maine.

Approximately 63% of freshmen graduate within 4 years and 89% at 6 years at UC schools. Considering that private schools are about 2 or 3 times more expensive, it is no surprise that UC student pop. is high. Unfortunately diversity scores is not predictive of quality of student post graduation. If admission requirements are lowered it may be the beginning of the decline in the prestige of a UC degree. The grads will be relegated to “public school” students who were admitted for their “diverse” ethnicity rather than their superior intelligence and goals. Sad to see.......IMHO....A UC degree used to be very well respected.
