AUBURN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Bimbo Bakeries in Auburn is unexpectedly shutting its doors this fall, putting its 49 employees out of work, some of them who’ve worked there for decades.

The announcement came as a shock to Auburn’s mayor, who just received the news last week. “I just wish there had been at least some conversation beforehand to see if there was something we could do,” said Mayor Jimmy Giannettino.

There was no indication that Bimbo Bakeries wanted to leave the area prior to the company making the decision, making this news even more of a shock for the mayor and the community of Auburn.

“As far as we knew, they were doing pretty well,” said Giannettino. “They supplied products to local food restaurants in the Central New York area, and nobody had even reached out to us to let us know they were even considering this.”

Eventually, the mayor did get a call from the company’s attorney, telling him it was a done deal.

“While I did appreciate him calling, I let him know that I was dismayed that Bimbo didn’t at least give us an opportunity to intervene, to see if there was something we could do to prevent the closure of the factory,” said Giannettino.

The mayor recommends that employees displaced by the sudden closing contact Cayuga Works Career Center about job resources.

“It’s extremely significant,” said Giannettino. “It’s their jobs, it’s their livelihoods. Most of them have families. They are either going to have to start over. I do want them to know that there’s assistance in the community to help them.”

Bimbo Bakeries indicates that its leaving to support future growth in a statement sent by the company.

“We continuously review and adjust bakery assets and utilization to ensure optimal production. After careful analysis and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close the Auburn, NY bakery this fall. We will transition production to bakeries in our network that are better equipped to support our future growth.”

“We remain grateful for our hardworking associates at the bakery and are committed to providing them with resources and support to ease their transitions.“

The company will be officially closing its doors this fall on September 6.

I thought the name sounded familiar. Bimbo is a Mexican brand. I had no idea they’d been in the U.S. for ‘decades’. Perhaps they gobbled up a local bakery chain that operated in N.Y.

In 2016, Mastroianni Brothers Bakery closed its doors after 90 years of business. They were in Schenectady, NY. Their bread made it as far west as the Utica/Rome area. It was excellent bread back then. A Utica-based pizza dough company bought the company, and has been producing various breads and rolls for a while now.

The RATS running the State have chased businesses out for years, i.e., Remington Arms in Ilion, New York, whose factory was first built in 1828.

I lived in Auburn from September 1980 to December 1983, while working at Auburn prison. I don't remember Bimbo Bakery during my time there. I did my grocery shopping at the Wegman's Store in Auburn back then. Other than the prison, local hospital, and restaurants, there isn't much in Auburn when it comes to jobs.

"Maybe the NY government will begin making bread."

They already did that. Auburn Prison had its own bakery. The inmates made fresh bread every day. At the evening mess run, each inmate in the prison was allowed to take a loaf of bread back to his cell each day.

The civilian staff had to keep track of handing out the yeast every day, but somehow, some inmate in the bakery was able to smuggle some out, and hand it out so they could make their own home brew. The stuff smelled horrible, like the puke from a drunken sailor...and it looked like it too. I remember the first time I smelled the crap going down a gallery. You couldn't miss it.

I don't know if Auburn still runs their bakery. I left there in 1983, and finished my career in 2003 in central NY State. Auburn also makes license plates, and also made metal and wood office furniture. Correctional Services has its own corporation that produces various products that are used all over the State, in other State agencies, and are sold to businesses. It's called CorCraft.

"Didn’t Remington pull out of Olean earlier?"

Ilion, New York after almost 200 years.

Bimbo bought Mrs Bairds bakeries. I think it’s a Mexican company. They may have bought up other regional brands.

Glad I never heard of it or ever bought it. I live in the small city of Rome in New York State. Auburn is a couple of hours west of me. Bimbo Bread has never made it this far east. Too much local competition I believe. I've got a nice little Italian bakery a couple of blocks from me. They make fresh bread and rolls every day, and it's very reasonably priced...like $3.00 for a huge loaf of sliced Italian bread...and the bread is excellent. I always give the girl behind the counter a fiver, and tell her to keep the change.

Nope all government and “not for profit” jobs aka Big Med. They chased out Xerox, Kodak and Bausch and Lomb.

I grew up in Rochester, and remember all those companies. Xerox Tower, Kodak, which my brother worked at after coming home from Vietnam, and up until his death in 1995, and Bausch & Lomb. There was a Bausch & Lomb factory not far from where we lived on the west side of the city.

As woke mission statements go, I think that was pretty tame. The bit about communities and preserving the planet reads more like it was tacked on. Take those out and it reads like a straightforward, just-business mission statement to me.

Biggest employer here now is University of Rochester and Wegmans. Very sad.
