It gets worse...the persistently heavy rains in Paris pose risk for sewage to spill into the Seine River. The Seine River is the venue for triathlon swimming and boating events.

From our good friend who's mom is French and has spent a lot of time there -

“Never wear open toe shoes in Paris - you will be instantly recognized as a tourist. The reason is that no one picks up their dog poop, and every night they wash the streets down so it's nice and shiny in the morning. And all this water runs off into the Seine...”
