Biden’s ability to win back skeptical Democrats is tested at a perilous moment for his campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite a week of campaign stops, interviews and insistence that he is the best candidate to confront Republican Donald Trump, President Joe Biden has done little to soften the push for him to exit the 2024 race.

Biden has weighty options before him this weekend that could set the direction of the country and his party as the nation heads toward the November election with an energized GOP after the Republican nominating convention to send Trump back to the White House.

The standoff has become increasingly untenable for the party and its leaders, a month from the Democratic National Convention that should be a unifying moment to nominate their incumbent president to confront Trump. Instead the party is at a crossroads unseen in generations.

From his beach home in Delaware, Biden, 81, is isolating with a COVID infection, but also politically with a small circle of family and close advisers. White House doctor Kevin O’Connor said Friday that the president still had a dry cough and hoarseness, but his COVID symptoms had improved.

The president’s team insisted he’s ready to return to the campaign this coming week to counter what he called a “dark vision” laid out by Trump.

“Together, as a party and as a country, we can and will defeat him at the ballot box,” Biden said in a statement Friday. “The stakes are high, and the choice is clear. Together, we will win.”

But outside the Rehoboth enclave the debate and passions are intensifying.

It’s unclear what else, if anything, the president could do to reverse course and win back lawmakers and Democratic voters, who are wary of his ability to beat back Trump and serve another term after his halting debate performance last month.

Enough of the soft approach, Mr. Biden. It’s time to go all Der Fuehrer on those who think you should quit. Scream, yell, and threaten. You know you want to. Just do it.

Attitudes of the electorate have changed almost not at all for this entire year.

Surveys say it is mostly about inflation with a secondary measured displeasure about all the prosecutions.

Surveys also say the critical truth that has disrupted the thinking in both parties. The electorate identifies as 45% independent and only about 26% each for Dems and GOP.

This is not about displeasure with cognition or displeasure with a debate performance. Replacing that candidate isn’t going to suddenly drag those Dems who became Independent back to the party.

Moving to independent measures the attitude about governance in general. The elites are being rejected, of either party.

So the debate has moved almost no numbers and ditto the gunshot. Those minds out there are not waiting to be changed by things like that. A party that has long term incumbents retire, erasing their elites, is a party that would get the attention of the growth of independents.

And of course this is not going to happen. The political careerists don’t have that principle.

Skeptical Democrats? Are these yahoos biologists? No. Do they have access to Brandon’s medical records? No. They suddenly find Brandon distasteful? Ew, that’s bad.

I hate to say it, but Biden makes all white men look bad. Biden is a poster child for privilege.

However, Joe Biden has done some things on his own. Few politicians have put their greed and corruption to such great use as Joe Biden. By comparison, they are small fry. Some are limited by scruples. Others are limited by nerve. Not so Joe Biden! I think he can take-em.

Hold on a minute. Biden got 81,000,000 votes, nearly 20 million more than Trump. If he loses 15 million votes, he will still beat Trump by a wide margin.

Why would the Democrats want to get rid of a President who had the most votes in US history?

Biden’s mental decline was clear several years ago. I expected the Democrats to dump Biden after the 2022 mid-terms. It’s incredible that they waited until after the primaries to dump him.

>>>It’s incredible that they waited until after the primaries to dump him.<<<

I think it’s part of their plan. The early debate kneecaps Joe, the DNC gets to replace him with an unvetted puppet, throw in an October Surprise and ballot harvesting… Another democrat win “to save our democracy”!

To be honest (yes, I sometime try new things) I think it is not fair to force Biden to decide these matters while he is affected by Covid, which causes “malaise.”

Afterward he may regret staying on and losing the insider golden parachute deal or quitting and looking like an old loser instead of the glorious hero he has been told by sycophants will be his image as an icon later.

However, he should make the right decision if China attacks US warships or Iran says they are going to use a nuke on Israel.

That’s why the Dems choosing Biden has always been wrong. To us, the American people.

“It’s incredible that they waited until after the primaries to dump him.”

Agreed—that is why I am not buying the “secret plan” arguments.

There was no good reason to wait this long. They could have rigged their own primaries and caucuses—and they are very skilled at it.
