I think that among political junkies it is well known that during presidential primary campaigns, especially when both parties have multiple candidates, all sorts of random Feds are seconded to the SS to provide the staffing needed to cover a large number of candidates. That just makes sense when the SS has to protect several, or even more than a dozen, extra people, for a few weeks, once every four years.

But that was not the situation on July 13. The sole Democrat candidate with SS protection was also POTUS, and already had a SS detail. The sole Republican candidate with SS protection was a former POTUS, and already had a SS detail. No independent candidates had SS protection on the 13th.

Given that Biden is making fewer appearances than usual for a POTUS, I am very skeptical that there was an operational need for Trump to have a SS detail that was both under strength, and largely not even SS.

Most of the detail would normally *not* be actual Secret Service, only the PDD, operations, and a few others. That would not excuse the apparent level of training we saw, nor the complete lack of operational control, nor some horrible decisions (DoSS saying they DECIDED not to put people on that building because of the slope).
