Billionaire Elon Musk said Tuesday he will shift the headquarters of privately held SpaceX and social media site X to Texas from California as a result of Gov. Gavin Newsom signing a new gender identity law for students.
The law, signed Monday, blocks school districts from requiring teachers to notify parents about changes in a student’s gender identity or sexual orientation without the child’s permission. It also requires the state’s Department of Education to create resources for families of LGBTQ+ students from seventh grade through high school.
“This is the final straw,” Musk wrote on X. “Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas”
Musk added that he made “it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children.”
In another post, the billionaire added that the San Francisco headquarters for X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, will move to Austin, Texas.
“Have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building,” Musk wrote on X.

Are you sure it is Austin?
Elon has become a pleasant surprise...
I find it amusing that Elon is unaware of the democrat like crime in Austin.
Three cheers!
Starbase is outside Brownsville, Tx.
Is Austin all that much better? He could have found a less liberal place in Texas.
Austin is little California in Texas.
He’s going to end up having a massive tech park there - running X and Grok AI and his Self-Driving Car data centers and of course Space X. That’s a lot of talent which can all be pooled together, pulled together, moved for special projects etc.
If I recall when be bought Twitter he came in with a handful of his Tesla programming engineers to clean those servers up. He even pulled a bunch of the servers out, literally, by himself and a few other guys to prove that they weren’t needed (I think they were the shadowbanning censorship algos). Or so the story goes.
Elon is a smart man. He loves Liberty and he follows the science.
Google says that Brownsville TX is 351 miles from Austin.
Elon is obviously a “fool Me once” guy...you don’t get a second chance...
Tax revenues follow the HQ
“Elon is a smart man. “
A smart man with common sense!
Why move to Texas? I think if I owned a company I would move it to Kingman, AZ. Land and homes are cheap. It is close to 3 major population centers (Las Vegas, Phoenix and Southern California). Transportation crossroads. Close to Vegas and Grand Canyon and Colorado River. If I was young I would invest in land there. I live in Reno and it is great here but expensive.
I always said that Austin is the anus of Texas, and El Paso (and Dallas) is the armpit, while Houston is the crotch.
Austin? You mean that suburb of Berzerkeley.
Kingman, AZ, for the young creative geniuses of SpaceX?
Riiiiight!
Space rockets in Travis County?
It’s gonna be near the gulf. Brownsville area.
