The local Pennsylvania sheriff defended the armed officer who encountered former President Donald Trump’s would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks on the rooftop moments before the shooting — claiming it was the right call to retreat after the gunman pointed the weapon at him.
Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe confirmed Monday that a local officer made contact with Crooks after being hoisted up to the roof by another officer — but fled when the sniper pointed his AR-style assault rifle at the officer.
“I would have done the same thing, absolutely,” the sheriff said.
comment. “All I know is the officer had both hands on the roof to get up on the roof, never made it because the shooter had turned towards the officer, and rightfully and smartly, the officer let go,” Slupe told KDKA.
The gunman immediately fired up to eight rounds at Trump, wounding him and killing a hero firefighter in the stands. Two others were also wounded.

“The deputy should have used the ladder the perp used.”
In an ideal world, yes. But it looks like a large building and that ladder could have been anywhere. I think kudos are in order for one officer quickly hoisting his partner up to the roof without wasting time running around to find a ladder. That was quick thinking.
But NOT firing warning shots was a nearly fatal mistake. Even his partner on the ground could have fired warning shots.
> and you don’t expect a sniper <
Good point. This cop was some combination of surprised, confused, and cowardly. Could be just one of those three. Could be two of them, or maybe all three.
The first two possibilities are forgivable. The third one is not.
If some assassin pointed a rifle at me I would kill him. Without thought. Without hesitation.
In the coward’s defense, if he had missed he’d be lobbing them into the crowd.
I don’t know if I would have charged the shooters position, but I sure would have raised a stink on the radio.
Probably would have ducked down and planned on an up-down to put one in his crotch.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Only God and civilians protected Trump that day.
I call BS to this entire story since no call of shooter was made on the radio. No warning, alerts, or messages of any kind.
There was also a ladder right there for the officer to use as the shooter no doubt used.
Same cops who blast knife wielders and folks pull out the cell phone too fast
Thank u
All he had to do was shot 3 or 4 rounds into the air. That would have kicked things off right away.
Michael Slupe is a FOOL!
Why didn’t they get up on the roof the same way the kid did????
So then, what was the purpose of hoisting him up to the roof? And why did the police require assistance to the roof when the shooter did not? And the shooter carried a rifle and not a holstered pistol.
This should be "but I haven't seen any video"
Can we hear his radio traffic reporting shooter up on the roof? Or did he neglect to do that too?
That would have been a good thing.
Nice post but it’s always been JBL sorts here
They can’t help it
> …how about a little gangster action duck and put his pistol over the edge and blast the little creep? <
The cop had maybe a 10% chance of hitting rifle guy that way. But it was still the correct thing to do!
One, the gunfire would have alerted everybody and his brother.
And two, it would have shaken up rifle guy. It’s hard to concentrate on taking a long shot when someone off to the side is shooting at you.
The cop had many options, your suggestion and others. But he evidently did nothing. Nothing at all.
do the snipers have a camera box mounted on their rifles or are those laser range finders?
Did you bother to read the story?
The officer had BOTH hands on the roof and was pulling himself up when the shooter pointed his rifle at him.
Just to be clear, HE WAS NOT EVEN ON THE ROOF!!!!!
A friggin seal would have let go too....
Armchair cops, ehhhh....
