The local Pennsylvania sheriff defended the armed officer who encountered former President Donald Trump’s would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks on the rooftop moments before the shooting — claiming it was the right call to retreat after the gunman pointed the weapon at him.
Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe confirmed Monday that a local officer made contact with Crooks after being hoisted up to the roof by another officer — but fled when the sniper pointed his AR-style assault rifle at the officer.
“I would have done the same thing, absolutely,” the sheriff said.
comment. “All I know is the officer had both hands on the roof to get up on the roof, never made it because the shooter had turned towards the officer, and rightfully and smartly, the officer let go,” Slupe told KDKA.
The gunman immediately fired up to eight rounds at Trump, wounding him and killing a hero firefighter in the stands. Two others were also wounded.

Exactly right. The would-be assassin is distracted and turns his rifle to the police officer. Why wasn’t he killed instantly when he threatened the police officer?
Apparently not but we will never know since the local cop didn’t try
Or even just fire his weapon into the air
Is anyone surprised?
I thought he alerted the SS immediately after moving away. Read that. Who knows where?
Yes, like the BS story of one officer boosting another onto that roof. It was too high for that. There are pictures of the ladder the shooter used to get up there. The cop, if one really went up there, used the same ladder the shooter did.
I was about to post the same.
We do know you would have done the same thing. Maybe you’d even have offered to be his spotter. You never-Trumpers should not be here, especially now.
I've been thinking about it. And, without being there, and not knowing the actual facts, I can give this officer some benefit of the doubt. Have you ever climbed onto your roof from a ladder using only one hand (if he's supposed to have his weapon drawn)? It's not stairs. He was using both hands to try to lift himself onto the roof, so he wouldn't have ready access to his weapon. The perp supposedly aimed his rifle at the officer.
The officer's head and torso would be exposed and then his legs as he swings them up to get on the roof. If he stands on the rungs and tries to peek over and shoot, he's still exposing his head and possibly torso, trying to maintain balance on a ladder, and trying to possibly get a shot off shooting toward the perp, and from the location of the ladder, shooting toward the perp would also result in shooting toward President Trump and the crowd if he misses a shot.
Again, this is armchair quarterbacking. I wasn't there. There is video of the perp climbing the ladder and crawling across the roof, but I have seen any video of the LEO who climbed up the ladder after the perp.
1) The deputy should have used the ladder the perp used.
2) you are correct, at a minimum you fire shots in the air to alert everyone.
3) We won’t talk about the deputy simply radioing the security detail. They are all in sync with the SS, they literally do this all the time everytime a prez or candidate comes to town, they pull state and local police from surrounding communities. Forgot the point of fleeing the perp. Most people, even LEO, are hesitant to shoot at people, just human nature. What not normal is not shooting warning shots and doing everything possible to alert the security detail.

> You mean to tell that if some nut pointed a rifle at you you wouldn’t retreat? <
That’s a valid point. On the other hand, none of the Secret Service agents next to Trump retreated as the bullets flew. The small female agent even tried to shield Trump with her body.
I dunno. Maybe we shouldn’t expect the same level of dedication from a sheriff as we would from a Secret Service agent. (I’m not being sarcastic there. It’s just a comment.)
Protect and serve means that they protect and serve their paymasters, the government and themselves.
Thank you for posting that. That is exactly what it says — he was being hoisted up by another officer and had his two hands on the roof edges (maybe even a gutter) trying to push up.
There was nothing else viable for him to do but drop down, and then the shooting started immediately.
This situation never should have occurred in the first place. We should not be going after the officer who tried to get up there. There are many other issues with this event.
When I saw 2 blacks shooting a zip gun at a Korean grocery in NY, although I was unarmed, I chased them away. I didn't do this because I was brave. I did it because it was the right thing to do.
The officer here, was derelict in her/his duty.
This stinks of BS.
Cops are int the news almost daily gunning down someone that had a firearm in hand.
This cop runs away?
“ Why didn’t the officer go up there with gun already drawn? I would have.”
Duck below roof, grab gun, immediately go back up.
But I wasn’t there…
Choice
Hero and stop the shooter
Or
Coward and retreat to mayhem and death
“…claiming it was the right call to retreat after the gunman pointed the weapon at him.“
BALONEY!!!!
If it were a DOG, the cop would’ve shot it down, not cower in fear.
If it were ME, I’d have had my head blown right off.
But no.. this guy was there to kill Trump. “..Yeah, better back off and give him his space..”
Not sure if that is fair… you don’t just charge to get shot.
The roof needed to be secure… once he had eyes on the weapon the order to shoot should have come from Secret Service… if he doesn’t retreat he just gets shot.
