The local Pennsylvania sheriff defended the armed officer who encountered former President Donald Trump’s would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks on the rooftop moments before the shooting — claiming it was the right call to retreat after the gunman pointed the weapon at him.
Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe confirmed Monday that a local officer made contact with Crooks after being hoisted up to the roof by another officer — but fled when the sniper pointed his AR-style assault rifle at the officer.
“I would have done the same thing, absolutely,” the sheriff said.
comment. “All I know is the officer had both hands on the roof to get up on the roof, never made it because the shooter had turned towards the officer, and rightfully and smartly, the officer let go,” Slupe told KDKA.
The gunman immediately fired up to eight rounds at Trump, wounding him and killing a hero firefighter in the stands. Two others were also wounded.

Just because he wasn't a hero doesn't make him a coward in this instance. I need to know more, were they properly trained by the SS as to what their duties were, why wasn't someone posted around the building and did they call "gun" on the radio instantaneously.
Am I missing something? When the police officer got to the top of the ladder, and the perp aimed his gun at him, the Secret Service officer who had him in his sights was watching all of this? He saw this unfold, yet STILL did not take him out?! He waited till he swung back around and started shooting at Donald Trump.
That Sheriff’s gotta go.
Yep, that could have been done once he ducked down.
Story has been out a while
I doubt he was hoisted up
Too high
Tons of other links even on scale
Can you not read?
“All I know is the officer had both hands on the roof to get up on the roof...after being hoisted up to the roof by another officer...never made it because the shooter had turned towards the office r”.
Or do you have a third hand to shoot with?
At all.
You make a good point
Think we will get the real details
Yes!
First and foremost, they should make a big alert and let Trump and everybody else drop to ground!
Even if that turned out to be a false alarm, it was the only safe thing to do!
I was once on Trump rally, and there was some kind of stuff (noise) going on. Trump ducked. It turned out to be false alarm.
The rally went on and everybody was happy.
Nobody complained about that false alarm!
“If the shooter clearly turned his rifle on the officer beginning to climb onto the roof, then wouldn’t that be sufficient justification for the police sniper to take him down at that instant?”
That’s assuming the counter sniper team can see the officer.
Or the Sheriff deputy assigned school resource office/monitor, that KNEW the killer at the FL Douglas High School and did not stop him entering- where he was banned from being on campus. Didn’t stop him and further, this guy retired one or two days after this horror— and got a full pension. Perhaps he’ll live with that for as long as he does— it’s a lot to be able to say that was “OK”. Noone in FL thought so- incl. 2 Governors- Scott and DeSantis.
Some of those Uvalde police went to jail for that
Bullets fired into the air fall to earth and kill people. Fire into the dirt.
>> That’s not much of a defense.
lol — exactly!
Not retreat- pull a semi-auto and pop back up when the dude took a first shot. From that distance (the ladder were he bought it) for any competent officer- he could have put 4 or 5 round right up his a@@ and that would have been (spinally speaking) the end of his firing. A the least the officer should have (and indeed may have) radio’d the central control about this shooter— pronto. Everyone here has some idea of what they themselves might have done.
The roof should have been off limits and in the perimeter. Period. Huge perhaps intentional screwup.
America’s finest. Two brave law enforcement officers backing up each other that law enforcement always runs away from someone with a gun who is obviously about to commit a crime.
I can’t believe the Sheriff said this was the right thing to do. Oh, wait, I guess I can believe it.
“That’s assuming the counter sniper team can see the officer.”
True. And apparently the officer just popped his head over the parapet and immediately dropped back down when the rifle was turned on him. He wasn’t standing on the roof fully visible to the CST.
But wouldn’t the CST have seen the assassin turn the rifle toward another target?
Even if he played the chicken, he could have discharged his weapon into the air on the ground to alert the stage....
