It was a fairly easy shot at 150 yards. To put it in perspective, army recruits shoot targets between 50 and 300 yards consistently, after just one day of rifle training. Its an absolute miracle he missed. In the JFK scenario, he was in a moving car - very different level of difficulty.
I think the witnesses who pointed him out and were yelling made him hurry - possibly saving the president’s liife.

good point ... and his subsequent hurried 2nd and 3rd shots were not the work of someone that knows how to target shoot ... the wannabe assassin was unable to pause long enough and reset himself and his sighting for his subsequent shots after his first shot missed, so he just wildly pulled the trigger a couple more times before he was blown away by the counter-sniper ...
I think you are right. I believe also if the reports are correct, a local cop made an attempt to get onto the roof where the shooter aimed his rifle at the cop who then retreated and then the shooter started firing quickly.
