Corrupt or not, it’s hard to think of a presidential nominee who has backed off and made way for someone else. Most incumbents backed off before nomination races for fear of being humiliated by a challenger. The one thing worse than losing a presidential race is for an incumbent to lose the nomination to an intraparty challenger.
