France has a stupid proportional representation system. Le Pen didn’t get but about 35%. The other parties split about 65% . . . BUT . . . the Macaroni delegates resigned and allowed the Socialists to fill the seats, thus 65% beats 35%.

The problem with these more sensible parties, is that there is a hard ceiling, they could get to 40%, but that’s about it. 60% are against them, and would vote for Hitler against them.
They do not have an Electoral College to protect them from the big cities.
Might not have made a difference this time, however.

It doesn’t, it has a first past the post system.
It has 577 election districts. Each has its own election like US Congressional Districts. The wrench in the works is multiple parties that aren’t tokens. The US would have similar results with more than two serious parties.
That sounds like a system that will eventually blow itself apart.
