It was their dream home until the hoarder next door turned it into a pricey prison
Los Angeles Times via Yahoo ^ | July 7, 2024 | Harriet Ryan

a mentally ill hoarder, has turned some six acres of green space into an unlicensed dump with more than a hundred rusting vehicles, mounds of trash and scrap metal, and hazardous waste that has polluted the ground and a nearby streambed.

Hypodermic needles, bags of marijuana, moldy clothes, human excrement, tires and condoms littered the street

Malone, Ryan and others living nearby have begged elected leaders and nearly a dozen government agencies for help for years

Fires have broken out repeatedly at Ferrera's illicit junkyard, where there are numerous containers of propane and other flammable liquids.

They counted 114 vehicles, including five the California Highway Patrol deemed “of interest,” suggesting they had been stolen or were suspected of involvement in a crime

They also found two shipping containers being used as living space, a trailer, dismantled car batteries, leaking high-voltage power equipment and a device that looked like a military-grade bomb. An ordnance disposal team summoned from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton determined the object was a practice munition and destroyed its fuse to render it safe

ests on soil samples taken from the junkyard and a streambed revealed levels of arsenic, lead, cobalt and other substances that exceeded federal safety standards, according to the EPA report, which concluded that the property contained “high levels of hazardous substances.”

an otherworldly landscape that included a tipped-over ambulance, part of a jetliner and a giant forklift

In many places it’s almost impossible to buy without an HOA, unless you have the means to buy a lot of acreage. I know them to be a 2-edged sword. However, anyone who thinks it’s ok that a neighbor keeps hazardous waste, etc. piled up in the backyard adjacent to yours, has no idea how property values work, much less common courtesy.

His trash is spilling out into the road, and other people’s property. He has toxic chemicals contaminating the surrounding soil. We’re trying to have a civilization here.

The good ol’ conservative idealism that exclusively benefits the worst in society at the expense of reasonable neighborly standards.

He wouldn’t be blocking their driveway or crapping on their lawn if he was in a hospital bed. Seems like an easy night-time, ski mask fix to me.

how is the trajectory of projectiles in one direction different than the flow toxic chemicals in the opposite direction?

A “mentally ill hoarder?” As opposed to sane, sober hoarder...the good kind

If this had happened in Florida the criminals doing this would have been arrested, tried and jailed by now. We don’t put up with that crap in Florida.

Turn it in to a homeless camp. It is probably cleaner.

I had a neighbor with a hoarding issues. Her car was so laden with newspapers, magazines and old restaurant menus that she broke her axle in the driveway. For some reason, the fire department came to her door and could not open it because of the enormity of the hoard and her family had her committed. It took a few 15 yard dumpsters to just empty the place out. She was unable to keep any more stuff in her house so she started with the car and filled that up pretty quickly. That’s what led to the locals getting involved.

We found out from the new owner that she was sleeping sitting up, eating in her car and taking showers and rinsing her clothes at the gym in the building where she worked.

Even the hoarders mother could not sell the property due to it’s condition.

This is one of the risks you take when you buy a home. Some scumball moves in next door and your 400K house is now worth 200k.

Sane HOAs are a good thing. Unfortunately, one can never really tell when a lunatic or lunatic committee will gain power.

“That’s a rather dumb comment. There are laws against that sort of thing.”

That’s the funniest idiotic reply I received.
I hope you realize just how ridiculously out of touch that sounds.

Now, Get off my lawn!
