With just four months until the presidential election, Democrats scramble to decide if they should replace President Joe Biden with a different candidate on their ticket in November.
After the 81-year-old stumbled, mumbled and blank-stared his way through his debate with Donald Trump in Atlanta last month, Democrats are concerned about his mental fitness and viability as a candidate.
The Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois is August 19-22 and will conclude with the party choosing its nominee for 2024.
It's now unclear if that will still be Biden.
Some names being floated as his replacement are California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and – more begrudgingly – Vice President Kamala Harris.
DailyMail.com breaks down how Democrats can oust Biden and the state laws regarding ballot printing and when it might be too late for the Party to choose a replacement for the incumbent president.
Biden is the sole candidate who is officially eligible for nomination at this stage, according to the party rules that will be formalized during the first day of the Convention on August 19.
Those within the Democratic Party have acknowledged that current rules make it hard for other candidates to earn the nomination this year and if Biden doesn't agree to step aside, the prospects become essentially impossible.
Delegates were finalized at selection on June 22 and were chosen on a state-by-state basis to represent support for the president in the nomination process. It's unlikely they would shift their backing.
There are 43,933 pledged Democratic delegates for 2024 and to win the presidential nomination a candidate must earn a majority of them – estimated at 1,968 this year.
But many say they aren't changing this late in the game.

I don’t get this response.
Oh did “not” just “do it” or the DNC wouldn’t have rescheduled its “convention” (virtual) to July 27. They did this entirely for OH. Moreover, Donna Brazile says the ballots have gone out and are due in by the end of THIS WEEK.
Rutabaga will be the nominee.
No, no, no.
Jeez people I’ve been updating everyone, but no one wants to listen.
OH said the ballot names had to be finalized by Aug. 7. They said this months ago and DEWEENIE signed off on it.
The DNC then RESCHEDULED a “virtual convention” for “before the Aug. 7 deadline.” Two weeks ago they announced this “virtual convention” to nominate Biden would come on JULY 27.
Yesterday Donna Brazile, a Biden minion, said that the ballots had already gone out to delegates and would be returned “BY THE END OF THIS WEEK.”
Biden will be effectively nominated by Friday. 90% of those delegates are BIDEN DELEGATES.
It is not an “election law.” IT IS THE DNC. They write their own laws (as per judges) and they said they will have a virtual nomination on July 27-—but Donna Brazile said yesterday the ballots already went out and will be returned by Fri. July 12.
Biden will be the nominee. He will be effectively nominated on Friday and officially nominated on July 27. This isn’t rocket science.
HE controls 90% of the delegtes.
That sounds very pollyanna-ish, and assumes US electioneering to be a solid paragon of lawful procedures.
If the Dems want to move the calendar around, they can easily do that, get courts to do that for them, and make it all work until about early September.
Biden is clearly unfit to be President, I’m appalled that anyone would consider putting him back into office.
“Biden will be the nominee. He will be effectively nominated on Friday and officially nominated on July 27. This isn’t rocket science.”
This is Apollo 1 rocket science.
:-)
Yeah. You’re a fighter. Take those namby pamby pretty boys behind the gym and show them that you were the Golden Gloves regional champ.
Did I mention you were the inspiration for both Love Story AND Road House?
I’d make you a steak dinner bet. Rutbaga will be the nominee on the DNC ballot in 2 weeks.
I’ll have Pollyanna sauce on that.
Too late. DNC already changed their nomination process. The ballots are already INCOMING.
Baris just mentioned that MN EARLY ballots go out soon-—that MN has the longest early voting system in the country.
Nope, they can’t finegle this.
Oh I don’t doubt that part, LS. My bet would be on if Dems kick him off. I am saying none of the things mentioned above (I.e. landslide loss etc.) would come to pass. I also believe he will stay.
Apparently we’ll know in a week, when the delegate ballots come in.
Suppose he secures the nomination and is put on all the state ballots but dies two weeks before the election?
At that point, at least the dead voters will have a chance to vote for one of their own.
Suppose the unthinkable happens and a dead Biden wins. Sympathy vote? Harris becomes President for the remainder of his term but that doesn’t make her President for the next term because nobody voted for her for President.
