My dad was in the WWII Pacific theater, Navy. I never once heard him mention anything about the war. When I was about 30, my mom stated he had had malaria during the war. That’s the extent of my knowledge of his service.

I had an uncle in the Korean War that was the opposite. He joked about how he spent his time there goofing off. He had a Bronze Star. I didn’t know that until he died.

I had to READ about what father (and his fellow soldiers) did during WWII in France, Belgium and Germany - because he would NEVER talk about it.
