You’re right, FRiend. I’m 70, of all the jobs I’ve worked, or still working, they don’t quite compare with my time on active duty. The day after my battery command ended, it was shocking how my life changed. The optempo went from 16 hour days to almost zero.

I’ve had some pretty challenging roles as a civilian, such as 5 years with the FDIC during the bank crisis, but they were not as satisfying as my military time.

Last summer, I spent a couple days with an Army buddy, first time we saw each other in 40+ years. I was his Best Man when he got married. He married a German girl, she didn’t speak English until they moved back to Virginia. My last two years in Germany, I rarely spoke English once I was off base.

Nailed it mate! I spent 3 years in West Berlin during the 60’s so appreciate and share your German experience. In the intervening years I’ve lost too many brothers to count and every one hurts...bad! Something about the veteran community that is unmatched. Only police and fire come close. God bless our troops.
