Lemon houses, also known as limonaie or giardino d’inverno (winter gardens), are greenhouses in Italy built to grow citrus fruits. They are a historical and architectural feature of Lake Garda, where they were built in the 15th century to take advantage of the lake’s microclimate and rocky slopes. The houses are unique structures that combine fixed parts made of stone pillars and wooden beams with removable parts made of glass and wooden boards. The removable parts are put in place depending on the season and temperature to protect the plants in winter and allow light to enter. The houses are also often fenced with high walls to protect them from winds and encourage plant growth.
The lemon houses were so successful that they allowed Lake Garda to become the northernmost place in Europe to grow lemons, and the area became a thriving lemon exporter. The houses were important for the survival of the local population and the cultivation of over 50 varieties of citrus, including lemons, oranges, olives, and capers. A contemporary Italian writer, Jacopo Bonafidio, described the design of the lemon houses as “a third Nature”.
