Place tarrifs on John Deere products coming out of Mexico so there’s no reason to move a plant there.

Self interest is not greed unlike what the Left would have you believe.

Self interest is how we achieve, build, grow, and proposer. Self interest is from God.

Assign greed to government and their voracious and greedy bureaucracies.

It’s not greed, it’s business.

The real culprits here are the governments - federal, state, and local. They have the power to make the United States a business-friendly place. But no.

Instead they heap on laws, taxes, and regulations. These things strangle business. Get rid of all that. Oh, and a small tariff wouldn’t hurt either.

Side point about unions: There is nothing wrong with unions. But thanks to the government, it’s not a level playing field.

If you want to go on strike, go on strike. But then the company should be able to permanently replace you. That’s not allowed anymore.

NAFTA has been killing America ever since Clinton foisted it on us. We have all these labor standards which only serve now to make foreign labor cheaper and more convenient for big companies.

I don't blame Deere at all. I blame the local, state, and federal gov't for laws and regulations that make it profitable to move to Mexico. The UAW is cutting its nose off to spite its face. For the workers, your greediness just kissed an average wage of $80,000/yr goodbye. True, you'd be making almost $90K per year under the new contract, if you had a job.

John Deere is woke and MBA driven. The first warning of who they were was refusing to let farmers work on their own machine by refusing to give them access to required software.
Now they picked some kid to be VP of Tractors with a contest where being photogenic was apparently a big part.
Now they move to Mexico.
Screw John Deere. And their CEO is massively overpaid. In 1965 CEO pay was about 20 times average worker pay. This CEO makes around 400 times the average worker.

The US industrial heartland has been the "rust belt" for decades.

This is just a bit of final mop up.

Accusations of “greed” as an explanation are misguided. They brand the speaker as an economic ignoramus. They are emotive, but it backfires with me. For starters, “greed” is left undefined. If you make money, you are greedy. If I make money, I’m smart. That’s often the way it works.

What is really going on? If unions drive up wages, they drive down employment. That’s the law of demand and it ranks right up there with the law of gravity as something you can rely upon. If environmentalists drive up energy costs, they drive down manufacturing. Government taxes and regulations also deserve scrutiny.

John Deere should also consider the rule of law in Mexico. Might they have to pay bribes or face a shut-down. Deere should also consider the rule of law in the US. Might they have to pay bribes or face a shut-down here.

If John Deere later claims to be a flag waving American company, anyone is free to yell BS.

My company has a large manufacturing plant in Tjiuana. It preserved all of the sales, marketing, engineering, and research jobs in the US. Labor was a huge part of it. The jobs are hot and dirty. Say what you want about the fabled American who just wants a decent paying job with benefits but it’s not accurate. Especially if you want the worker to show up on time everytime and work hard.

We could not staff our plants in the US and still have a viable price point. Everyone talks about wanting high wages but no one wants to pay high prices. $20/hr and gold plated benefits. That’s was 15 years ago. I’m not sure how much $ would have been enough.

Also energy and raw materials are cheaper in Mex.

Yeah, they complained when Caterpillar moved out of Peoria, Illinois, too. Now, Peoria’s top businesses are all hospitals and healthcare with one Indian (the country) owned bank in the mix.

Caterpillar suffered no long term harm.

No you idiots who called this greed. It’s called survival. They have to get out from under the insane taxes and regulations in what used to be America.
