If I remember correctly one of the Yukio Mishima novels the man cutting himself gets only part of the way for the needed completion pattern to have honor in his suicide ritual so he begs his student to come over to complete the slash.
Sort of like Kirk Douglas in the Viking movie asking with a glance for his enemy to hand him the sword so he can die in honor and go to the next world as a warrior.
