Egypt hosts over 600,000 refugees, asylum seekers: UNHCR

une 25, 2024 (CAIRO) – Egypt is hosting at least 672,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers from 62 countries, with Sudanese forming the largest group.

This is more than double the number from a year ago with major conflicts across its borders. according to figures from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Most of the refuges live in urban areas of the capital, Cairo and the North Coast.

The UN agency said more than 617,000 people forced to flee Sudan have approached its office in Egypt since April 2023 as it scales up delivery of cash assistance and registration to address the most urgent needs of new arrivals.

Since the onset of Sudan’s conflict in April 2023, UNHCR said it has observed a six-fold increase in Sudanese registering as refugees, mainly women and children.

The situation has been worsened by the ongoing crisis in Gaza, the agency said.

In response to the Gaza situation, UNHCR has reportedly delivered water, clothes, blankets, jerry cans, and sleeping mats to Gaza through the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), and cash assistance to medical evacuees from Gaza into Egypt.

UNHCR has been operational in Egypt since 1954 after the Government of Egypt and UNHCR signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Since then, UNCHR has provided protection services including all aspects of registration, documentation, refugee status determination and resettlement to those who are forcibly displaced.

Translation: Please don’t expect Egypt to take on Gazans. Egypt has no room left in the inn. The UN expects Israel to keep putting up with a culture that’s committed to Israel’s destruction.

I notice they do not support Gazan refugees.

Yes, though this is the UNHCR, High Commissioner for Refugees, who handle all refugees throughout the world except palestinians. They have UNWRA who handles only them, and in many cases fight at the terrorist’s side.

BTW, don't expect anyone to worry about Sudan's Christians, a persecuted 5% or so of the populations. Jewish community was much smaller, but evacuated by the early 70x.

They have a coast on the Red Sea, more protected than the Mediterranean. Joe has a pier to sell them.

Interestingly, they will take refugees from Sudan but not Gaza. Has the isolation and radicalization made the Gazans too toxic?

Note post 5. Gazan refugees have their own dedicated agency, UNWRA

Have you seen the border wall between Egypt and Gaza? That will tell you what Egypt thinks of the Palestinians.

UNHCR doesn’t handle palestinian refugees, that’s the exclusive domain of UNWRA. They give a little money, but no UNWRA refugees there.

While it is all good and well for black Africans to enter Egypt, the Egyptian government still refuses to let its own native sons return home from their Occupation of Gaza.

This is very evil and anti-humanitarian. It has to end. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi needs a little very straight- talking to. Like now! (or yesterday)

The UN, “...scales up delivery of cash assistance and registration to address the most urgent needs of new arrivals...”

They won’t say it but that money will be primarily supplied by the US
