Trump builds ties with Gov. Glenn Youngkin in an effort to flip Virginia

President Donald Trump is building a relationship with Glenn Youngkin in the hope that the popular Republican governor can help bring Virginia into play this fall.

Youngkin's election in 2021 made him the first Republican in Virginia to win statewide since 2009, but he did so by running a campaign that kept Trump at an arm’s length. Youngkin also waited to endorse Trump in the 2024 race until after the Super Tuesday primary, when the former president easily won Virginia.

While Trump has poked fun at Youngkin’s name and made note of him for keeping his distance, the two are now slowly starting to work together. They recently held a private meeting at Trump’s golf club in Virginia — sources from both sides said it went well — but at this stage Youngkin is not being vetted as a potential running mate, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the process.

Representatives for Youngkin did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Trump campaign dismissed the palace intrigue around the selection process.

Brian Hughes, a Trump campaign senior adviser, said in text message: “As President Trump has said himself, the top criteria in selecting a Vice President is a strong leader who will make a great President for eight years after his next four year term concludes. But anyone telling you they know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying unless that person is named Donald J. Trump.”

NBC News has previously reported that Trump’s VP search is focused on North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. Trump has publicly said that he expects to announce his choice around the time of the Republican National Convention, which begins July 15. But three sources familiar with discussions said earlier that timing remains a topic of debate.

Even if Youngkin does not enter the mix for vice president, he would still be a valuable political asset for Trump. The former business executive, who by law is limited to one term, has enjoyed a popularity rating above 50% for most of his time in office. He also has proven to be skilled on the campaign trial and adept at cable news interviews — characteristics Trump holds in high regard.

Youngkin is scheduled to appear on stage with Trump for the first time on Friday at a rally in Chesapeake, Virginia.

There are no guarantees in anything - but if Trump flips Virginia on Election Night, we’re gonna have a good night.

Trump knows what he needs, a strong executive, not a comic strip lover like Pence.

Virginia is one of those states that give us false hope on election night, before reversing later in the evening. I don’t believe for a second Trump will win Virginia, the DC outer ring is too tied into the establishment and the federal jobs. Virginia is gone.

Youngkin is backed by the Carlyle Group where he used to work and is Bush Sr’s old boss.

I still think he should consider Winsome Earle Sears, Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor. She’s black, ex- military and takes to stuff from anyone.

It’s because they cheat. They count the entire state to see how many Northern VA ballots (i.e., Democrat votes) then count them late in the evening and pull out the necessary wi Ning number

Nope. She turned on Trump right after the Mar-a-Lago raid and said his time had come and gone and she was supporting other candidates

...true, and don’t forget the quite blue Richmond area, larded with Federal jobs, and the Commonwealth’s Tidewater, area, with almost too many Dept. of Defense locations/facilities/bases to count... we love Virginia, although we no longer live there, but have seen it turn from reliably red to purple/blue over the nearly half-century that we lived there...thank goodness The Lone Star State is still pretty red.....at least for now.....

Youngkin sure as hell wouldn’t be my first pick, but at least he’s not a senator. Those guys for the most part are compromised and corrupted.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I would be very happy with that choice. I had forgotten about her.

She's not eligible. She was born in Jamaica.

Love Youngkin as I’m a Virginian, but he barely won VA so don’t see how he can help Trump in any significant way.

I agree 100%. She is a tough cookie.

Youngkin is one of the reject frat boys sitting in the corner.

Her best qualities are that she is black in the military? Who gives a crap. Are you also aware she is not a Trump supporter? And she is from Jamaica. Educate yourself.

Is Virginia, even considering it’s edge driven swampiness, in need of flip talk here or is a good steal spanking all that’s needed???

Fine, but no VP for Youngkin. Let him finish his term and put him in the cabinet or as ambassador somewhere.
