Officer's gun accidentally fires, injuring 3 at Reno Livestock Events Center concert

An investigation is underway after an officer's gun accidentally went off and injured three people during the kick-off concert at the Reno Rodeo Wednesday night.

A deputy with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office saw a physical domestic disturbance at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. While addressing the incident, one of the people involved in the domestic engaged in a physical altercation with the deputy.

The Reno Police Department said that plain clothes officers who were working the Reno Rodeo concert responded to assist. Due to the large crowd, officers were unable to get through immediately. A responding officer jumped a fence to quickly get to the deputy.

His holster got caught on the fence as he went over, dislodging his handgun which fell onto the ground. When the gun struck the ground, it discharged a single round.[Emphasis added]

Three people were treated for minor injuries from debris.

Reno Police Department authorities say this incident is currently under investigation and they are examining all aspects of what happened to determine if there was a malfunction with the holster, firearm and if there are any practices that need to be addressed.

During a news conference on Thursday afternoon, Officer Chris Johnson said he couldn't specify what kind of gun the officer was carrying because there's a long list of approved service weapons. He reiterated this was an accident and their commitment to keep the public and community safe.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says they've taken a report for the incident.

There is a real reason police departments donโ€™t use those.

Some do and others, well, some got pistols with a twelve-pound trigger pull instead - because the department needed to avoid negligent discharges.

“Even Hi-Point pistols have manual safeties.”

Even?

I hope you are not implying that striker-fired pistols used by LE have safeties ...

It is all personal preference. None of my self-defense firearms--Sig Sauer P365, P320, Ruger LCP and LCP II, Glock G42, and others have ever had a safety. I've never bought a pistol, other than hammer-fired 1991, with a safety. As a firearms instructor, doing security work, etc., safety are the very rare exceptions. None of my revolvers have safeties.

And, yes, I always have a round in the chamber.

Again, personal choice.

All of my rifles and shotguns have safeties.

Yes, I say even Hi-Point pistols have manual safeties because despite of the low cost, Hi-Point included them.

Great retention holster you got there, officer.

If I ever had a weapon, I would certainly hurl it into a concrete floor to see if it goes off.

Belittle those who discovered the Sig P320 wasn't drop safe, but you should be grateful they did. Omaha Outdoors only did the tests after reports came out that the pistol could discharge when dropped. Sig Sauer has since corrected the deficiency.

Note that every one of these TV cops is violating what may be the most important rule for safe gun handling; keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

So far, last I looked, they have not publicly disclosed the make and model of firearm, whether it was stock or modified, and what type of holster.

This would not have happened with Deputy Barney Fife His one bulllet would have been in his pocket, safe and inert.

I learned a valuable lesson as a young man when it comes to inserting yourself into a “domestic altercation.” Don’t. You get involved, next thing you know you wind up fighting both of them. Just honk your horn or put the high beams on them. Other than that, mind your own business.
