There is me and my team and four hostages, and a man who would help do awful things to me and my companions if I don’t blast him, so I blast him, as is the reasonable thing to do.
Each such shooting decision point has a ~25 to 1 proportionality ratio.
Repeat until me and my companions are safe.

They were in a massive, multi-hour firefight inside what amounts to a city center. I heard reports there were .50 cal machine guns firing from inside apartment building along with all kinds of other weapons. The IDF were basically surrounded - they knew it was going to be an ambush - and went in anyway. If Hamas didn’t take the hostages, didn’t hide them inside a densely populated area, or didn’t put up a fight and just released the hostages knowing they were up against a formidable fighting force and that shooting would cause collateral damage as well as their own friendly fire deaths and destruction of these buildings, then these deaths wouldn’t have happened.
If the 200 were terrorists (as they were) why not?

I don’t care what city or country you name. If some group takes hostages, the government will send in the SWAT team or some type of military commando unit. They will try to negotiate their release, but eventually if they are not released the government is going to go in heavy and take out the kidnappers. This is what will happen in practically every country on earth except maybe a few spots where there is civil war and no functioning government.
