The best narrative is to be found in the early chapters of Timothy Snyder's Road to Unfreedom. Snyder is a real historian who speaks 6 languages and reads 12, including Russian, Polish and Ukrainian. His text is copiously footnoted, he read and interviewed hundreds of sources.
