Joe Biden and Donald Trump will enter CNN’s Atlanta studio next Thursday for the most important 90 minutes of this election season. What they say, the impressions they leave, their confrontations, mistakes and humanizing moments could determine who wins in November.

To understand what each camp faces, I talked with five Republicans and three Democrats who have helped presidential candidates with debates, from role-playing opponents and critiquing prep sessions to spinning the press after the studio lights were cut.
Everyone agreed that both candidates face tests of self-awareness and impulse control. Mr. Biden must demonstrate sustained mental acuity. He can’t freeze, stare blankly or sound befuddled. Mr. Trump can’t come off as unhinged or enraged. The words “rigged election” shouldn’t pass his lips. He has to keep his cool and can’t make it all about himself.

The experts I interviewed agreed that Mr. Trump should make the election a referendum on Mr. Biden’s four years while Mr. Biden should make it a choice between the stability he’ll provide and Mr. Trump’s chaos.
Mr. Trump has the easier task of validating the public’s feelings of discontent. He can hammer the cost of living, the border crisis and the decline of public safety in many American cities. Voters already think Mr. Trump is better at handling these issues. The former president should spend as much time on what he’ll do in his second term as on Mr. Biden’s failings.
Experts cautioned that Mr. Trump shouldn’t overhype issues, such as by blaming Mr. Biden for Americans getting killed by illegal migrants, an argument that can easily be turned back against him. All it takes is one such victim on Mr. Trump’s watch for Mr. Biden to flip the issue on him and muddy the waters.

That just made my point. Thanks.
You forgot to add that the mainstream media is controlling the narrative so Trump needs to be smart. It could either end up like 2016 or 2020. The ball is in his court.
No I didn’t forget anything. Again, those who support Trump know all about the fake media. Of course the whole thing is rigged against Trump. Trump walks into a lyons den. This is nothing new.
You forgot, Trump who had never been elected to any office, blew 17 professional politicians off the stage, one by one. It was historic. Did you miss it?
Trump wa calm and cool in the 2nd 2020 Debate, even though Biden was trying to get under gis skin.Like you are trying to do to me right now.
Ignore him, he’s just trying to get under your skin.

Biden only functions with drugs if he’s plopped in front of a teleprompter. And lately even that isn’t helping.

Will the enthusiasm demonstrated by Trump supporters at MAGA events carry over into actual votes. Despite the fact Trump appeals to a lot of base gut issues, do they enjoy him more as an entertainer, or as a person who knows how to help them.
My husband (who was born in Peoria, deep common man thinker), was in a bar in Iowa when the Nixon/Kennedy debate was being televised. A question was asked about President Truman’s “salty” language in the White House. Nixon said something like, “when I am the president I will use the language that is suitable and appropriate for use in such an historic residence”, or something with that tone. On the other hand Kennedy said, “I think that is Mrs. Truman’s problem.” My husband thought that night as did a lot in that bar, “Kennedy is going to win.” Which he did.
One thing that is going to handicap Trumps usual tactics is the fact only the mike of the designated speaker will be on. Thus no off the cuff comments and interruptions by either candidate will be heard by most of the audience.
It was commonly said after that debate that the people who heard it on the radio thought Nixon won it hands down. I was still in high school, didn’t care.
What are the odds the Dems put in a ringer for Dementia Joe?
My fear is that if Xidung does really poorly in the “debate”, that will give the DNC power brokers the excuse to dump and replace the pseuo-president with someone more appealing, like a “woman of color” who isn’t named Kamala. No clear winner might be the best outcome.
btt
And that is the TRUTH.
Tremendous opportunity for DJT but it all depends on Biden self immolating. If he can keep his cool and Biden stumbles it will be lights out for Joe and Kamala will ascend.
Another fake debate. Who cares?
I wont waste my time.
The Biden team is already rehearsing the answers.
Trump needs to get Biden off script.
The “moderators” will battle to stay on script.
