As of now, the Panama Canal is owned by Panama. Although the United States entered a lease agreement in 1903 to construct and operate the canal, Panama always retained ultimate control. The American lease agreement ended in 1999, and since then, China has won bids to manage specific sections of the canal’s ports. While China’s control isn’t ownership, it has raised concerns for developed nations like the U.S., which rely on the canal for trade and security¹.
