I would much prefer someone trying to shoot me with a 2-3 second burst of automatic fire, then to hunt me down and fire off 30 precise shots as I try to escape or hide.

I concur. In the mid 1980s, I was in a billet that allowed me to fire full automatic M16s. After about a 100 rds per session, I would tire of shooting the M16, because the first round would go where I wanted it, but the rest went else where. Later, I read where the British determined that it took about 10,000 rds of dedicated training to become proficient in shooting the Sten submachineguns. As such they started making semiautomatic Stens.
