Honduras Announces Mega-Prison to Combat Crime Surge
Tico Times ^ | June 15, 2024

Honduras announced on Friday night the construction of a mega-prison for 20,000 inmates, among more than a dozen measures, by declaring a “security emergency” to combat the overwhelming crime. In a national radio and television broadcast, President Xiomara Castro and other members of the National Defense and Security Council (CNDS) unveiled the “crime solution plan” in response to public outcry over the surge in violence.

“Given this declared security emergency, the immediate construction of an Emergency Detention Center (CRE) with a capacity for 20,000 inmates in the unpopulated area between the departments of Olancho and Gracias a Dios (east) is ordered,” announced the head of the military, Roosevelt Hernández.

He added that inmates currently confined in the national penitentiary system will be “immediately” transferred to the CRE. Around 30 prisons house approximately 21,000 inmates in the Central American country.

The construction of the prison and other measures in the plan resemble those undertaken by the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, through which he has managed to control the “cancer” of gangs.

If they don’t the CO’s lives are worth nothing if the prisoners get hold of them.

Barry Soetero should fly down and fix Honduras. He did so well during his tyranny.

2 prisoners per cell. One bed 48” wide. One sheet only. That way they’ll have to cuddle up to keep warm.

They’re taking a clue from Bulke only because it works. Should we pay for the prison? Send a bunch of illegals, not necessarily Honduran.

They’re taking the lead from Trump if you look at it objectively.

There should be no doors or gates or entrance. The prisoners are just dumped over the wall. A death zone around the perimeter: no warnings, no excuses. Just instant death.

We could use several of these prisons in California.

They should empty their prisons and send the inmates to the USA like the rest of Central and South America is doing. It’s much cheaper.

That’s a photo of El Salvador’s new prison and what they did to MS13.

El Salvador went from being one of the most dangerous countries in the world to being one of the safest.

It’s amazing what putting and keeping bad guys in prison can accomplish.

Just execute them to remove the chance they make their way to the US.

Yes, but don't forget it's the bribeable guards who bring in drugs, weapons, cell phones, etc.

Just like the prison guards in this country.

"El Salvador went from being one of the most dangerous countries in the world to being one of the safest."

I was going to paste that but then did some research. El Salvador is still claimed to be one of the most crime ridden countries in Central America.

I didn’t make it up. I did read it on the Interwebs. You know what they say about that.

Likely the weight of old data. It is now the second safest in the Americas after Canada. No mystery here. Frequent flyers are imprisoned - forever. El Salvador’s version of three strikes, without the guilt of Jim Crow.

[Under President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador has experienced one of the most spectacular declines in violent crime in recent memory, anywhere in the world. Despite ranking among the most dangerous countries on the planet a mere decade ago, the Central American state today boasts a homicide rate of only 2.4 per 100,000 people—the lowest of any country in the Western Hemisphere other than Canada.]

It may not be perfect, but the president of El Salvador presents well, and he tells the media to stuff it. My prayers are for his success, and that he does not get drunk on power.
