The U.S. Navy prepared for decades to potentially fight the Soviet Union, then later Russia and China, on the world's waterways. But instead of a global power, the Navy finds itself locked in combat with a shadowy, Iran-backed rebel group based in Yemen.
The U.S.-led campaign against the Houthi rebels, overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, has turned into the most intense running sea battle the Navy has faced since World War II, its leaders and experts told The Associated Press.
The combat pits the Navy's mission to keep international waterways open against a group whose former arsenal of assault rifles and pickup trucks has grown into a seemingly inexhaustible supply of drones, missiles and other weaponry

The AP article uses the phrase ‘sustained combat’ since it is a daily occurrence.
“The Eisenhower’s air crews have dropped over 350 bombs and fired 50 missiles at targets in the campaign, said Capt. Marvin Scott, who oversees all the air group’s aircraft. Meanwhile, the Houthis apparently have shot down multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones with surface-to-air missile systems.”
Not fighting harder against the Hooties is a 0bama/Biden Admin political decision to appease the Iranians until they get a working nuke or two. When that is achieved, and used on Israel and NYC, then 0bama/Biden can comfortably surrender for the ‘greater good’.
“We’re going to have to put boots in the sand at some point. Already are without a doubt.”
The Commandant USMC in all his wisdom took away ALL of the Marines tanks, most of the artillery, all of the combat engineers, and the Amtracks are no longer allowed in the water except for war emergencies.
It’s almost like they needed another forever war...
I just cannot roll my eyes anymore.
The Houthis will crucify people. There are news items of it.
What a pant-load of BS!
Today’s pathetic DEI-constructed & led Navy would have surrendered to the japs on December 8th...
What an insulting title and BS article content...
350 bombs and 50 missiles! WOW.... The USS Valley Forge did that much on it’s first attack on Korea.
And during Inchon;
“Valley Forge’s Air Group 5 made numerous daily strikes against North Korean targets. Troop concentrations, defensive positions, and supply and communications lines were repeatedly bombed by the A-1 Skyraiders and the F9F Panthers and F4U Corsairs delivered rocket and cannon fire. Over 5,000 combat sorties delivered 2,000 short tons (1,800 t) of bombs and rockets between 3 July and 19 November 1950. During this time, Valley Forge maintained a high operational record as she steamed up and down the coast of Korea, a distance equal to twice around the world.”
And as many as 11 carriers saw action.
And then there is Vietnam.
The audacity of these guys crowing about sustained combat. Like Carriers and the Gun Line ships in Vietnam didn’t exist.
That’s around 7000 bombs depending on the breakdown. from just ONE vessel.
I understand keeping morale up, but jeeze that’s very self aggrandizing.
The Navy is shooting down $50k drones with $10m missiles.
The US needs to buy some Iranian drones to deal with the Yemenis.
What exactly is the war aim here?
I think we can agree the Houthi are a bad lot and need to be stopped from interfering with world trade. And stopping them is a worthwhile goal, unlike some of the messes the US military gets in these days.
But what specifically is the goal militarily? I'm not asking for operational details, just what's supposed to happen when it's over?
Over? Or just keep it going as long as possible?
Negotiation of terms perhaps? Pay them to stop?
Admiral Halsey and Admiral Yamamoto are both spinning in their graves with the comparison of these goat humpers with drones to the Imperial Japanese Navy.
I suppose if measured in dollars funneled to the Grift, it’s far more intense now.
The modern-day equivalent of the Barbary Pirates.
Perhaps you've heard of them?
When I hear silly things like this story I think the last thing this government did right was WWII. Everything since has been less intentional and much less successful.
In a right and sensible world we would blow the living hell out of the Ewoks, take their peninsula firing location, occupy it and control it. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper and safer.
In an unsuccessful attempt to placate their rabid supporters.
“...I think the last thing this government did right was WWII. Everything since has been less intentional and much less successful.”
The UN began October 24, 1945.
Well, there is that but I don’t think it is the whole cause.
