Navy Capt. Michel Brandt has been relieved of command of the USS Somerset, an amphibious transport dock ship, the service announced Friday. Brandt was fired “due to a lack of confidence in her ability to lead the crew” by Rear Adm. Christopher Stone, commander of the Expeditionary Strike Group 7, according to the Navy statement. She was relieved Thursday.

A “lack of confidence” is often cited by the military when removing a commander. Brandt has commanded the ship since July 2023, according to the Navy. Capt. Tate Robinson was assigned to temporarily replace Brandt as commanding officer of the Somerset until a permanent commander is selected for the ship. Robinson is currently commodore of Amphibious Squadron 5 at Naval Base San Diego, the Navy said. Brandt has been assigned to administrative duties with the Pacific fleet’s Naval Surface Force commander. The USS Somerset’s homeport is listed as Naval Base San Diego. The Somerset has been operating in the Indo-Pacific region and took part in the Balikatan exercises in the Philippines in May, according to Lt. Grace Kording, public affairs officer with the Naval Surface Force at Naval Base San Diego The Navy offered no additional details about firing Brandt. Navy Capt. Michel Brandt was relieved as the commanding officer of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset on June 6, 2024, service officials said. Navy Capt. Michel Brandt was relieved as the commanding officer of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset on June 6, 2024, service officials said. (Evan Diaz/U.S. Navy) “Navy commanding officers are held to high standards of personal and professional conduct,” the Navy said in its statement. “They are expected to uphold the highest standards of responsibility, reliability and leadership, and the Navy holds them accountable when they fall short of those standards.” Brandt is a native of Oak Grove, Ky., according to her Navy profile. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1998 and was commissioned through the Navy ROTC program. Among her assignments, Brandt has served on the littoral combat ships USS Freedom and USS Fort Worth and as reactor officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Guess she never made it to “Commodore”.

Nope, she only made it to the Rear.

I always understood the Peter principle to be a promotion to where you were least effective and there you’d stay . . . promoted to peak incompetence.

The bio credits her with a tour as nuke officer on a carrier. Classically, this would have been her “major surface vessel command” prior to taking command of one the 12 nuclearvaircraft carriers.

The nation, and the Navy, may have been saved a major disaster by kicking her out now.

Being a good ship captain isn’t for everyone.

I spent about 2 years at what was then known as the Air Defense Board at Fort Bliss (82-83). I found it interesting that the previous six CO’s went to work for Raytheon shortly after retiring. It was like a damn class reunion when they dropped in for a visit.

My arrival there was a bit tense. I was the Colonel’s fair haired boy, as he was my Battalion Commander in Germany. He put me in the operations officer role, normally an O-5 slot, and I had just made Captain.

It was a great job, a large portion of my time was spent on the informational briefings to the many VIPs who were interested in the new weapons systems we were testing.

Like KJP, I had a briefing book, but it was a placeholder. The Old Man rarely spoke when questions were asked, except when it was a 2-4 star general or a congressman. I always had a full rehearsal prior to a briefing, to include an inspection of the conference room.

Lost mooring from off the floating dock that broke loose off of Gaza/Israel.

Check the ship’s log for this logistical warship. Comparable to the old “rollon-rolloff” transports.

8 years of Obama. 4 years of Biden.

Can you imagine if we fight an actual war against a nation like Iran? We'll get our @$$es kicked. The Iranians will use drones to take out our carriers in the Persian Gulf.

Correction- the Somerset carries 2 of the LCAC (cushioned air carriers for rapid beach deployment of armor,APCs etc. Rapid troop deployment on huge air cushioned hovercraft).

Not roll on roll off (way out of date on that one).

Crucial support ship for assault landings. Conventional powered. In the Phillipines war games a pretty important vessel for use in taking on chi-com commandeered “islands” they have dredged of Phillipine coral islands.

Nor is this design ship a fast Littoral combat ship- which this officer formerly served on two (one now decommissioned) which is powered by Rolls Royce waterjets up to 54mph in a Sea State 3 (a large jet ski iow with cannon, and rocket launchers). The USS Fort Worth is still in service and much improved over the decommissioned USS Freedom which this officer served on both, and then as a nuclear power officer on the USS Roosevelt (the carrier which had to dock in Guam because of massive Covid infection contracted with a harbor visit to... DaNang Vietnam ( a place filled with Chi=Com agents). The Roosevelts Captain was relieved of command for major security violations (yapping to the San Fran press about “we aren’t at war with CHina” kind of crap). Relieved by President Trump through the SecNav. An entire Carrier Strike Group shut down for more than a month in a mission critical area (probably bio-attacked) traversing the S. China Sea from Vietnam.
