Zelensky Fires Back at Russian Claims That He’s Illegitimate After His Mandate Ended in May: ‘Our People Are Free’

With his constitutional Presidential mandate expired, the ‘champion for democracy’, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky is facing the discredit by the Russian enemies.

Recently re-elected in a landslide, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s has been repeatedly clear about how Moscow sees the Ukrainian leader as lacking legitimacy.

For the first time, in a press conference in France alongside President Emmanuel Macron, Zelensky addressed the allegations and dismissed them.

Reuters reported:

President Volodymyr Zelensky said his legitimacy is recognized and determined by the Ukrainian people while criticizing that of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“‘President Zelensky’s legitimacy is recognized by the people of Ukraine. Our people are free. Putin’s legitimacy is recognized only by comrade Putin’, he told a press conference in Paris.”

As we see, the leader who cancelled elections sees himself as more legitimate than the one who held them and won in a landslide. So it goes.

The Presidential elections in Ukraine were supposed to take place this spring, and by late May, Zelensky’s five-year term of office ended.

Zelensky now is ruling by force of Martial law in his country.

“However, martial law introduced following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 bans any wartime election. The constitution says the president serves until a newly elected one takes office.

Putin claimed several times that Zelensky is illegitimate after his five-year term ended this May.”

Putin says that the only Ukrainian authority Russia recognizes as of now is the speaker of Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

But Western leaders – who are after all Ukraine’s sponsors and handlers – have not questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy.

Zelensky’s response comes days after Putin started claiming that presidential power should be shifted to speaker of Ukraine’s parliament Stefanchuk.

It is perhaps not a great sign that Zelensky is now talking of himself in the third person. Kyiv Independent reported him as saying.: “It is the people of Ukraine who elect him, and I am very grateful for their support. Our people are free. This is what we are fighting for.”

The latest presidential election should have been held on March 31, 2024, with Zelensky’s term would ending on May 20.

Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk also dismissed Putin’s claims about Zelensky’s legitimacy; “Volodymyr Zelensky remains and will remain Ukraine’s president until the end of martial law. All this is in accordance with Ukraine’s Constitution and laws.”

Face it Adorno, Zelensky is a dictator plain and simple.

Simple thinking would go that way.

In Ukraine there is still a legislature, and a court system. They still pass laws that Zelensky might not like. The lawmakers may or may not agree to the extension of Selensky's wartime powers. Zelemsky would be gone after the war is over, even if Ukraine wins. That's not how dictatorships work. We had a president whose terms in office lasted more than 8 years, and he wasn't called a dictator, and was gone once the country got back up on its feet. Wars are not normal times in any country. So, dictatorship? I totally disagree.

All of it. Your propoganda machine

You make no sense whatsoever.

Propaganda? Your post doesn't indicate any specific examples and doing an analogy with vehicles just goes to show that, you can't back up your arguments, whatever they are or were. Try to make sense, and don't use vague language.

We’re as close to WWIII as we were during the Cuban missile crisis, with the difference we have a group of ppl from both political parties cheering for war. Ignore it, or join in, but censorship isn’t an answer.

It might pay for you to focus some. Biden has given Zelensky hundreds of billions of our tax dollars not to mention billions in American weapons with permission to fire on targets in Russia. No one sane wants this.

If the US wasn’t funding, sending weapons, and interfering in Ukraine, I would agree these threads are crap.

But this is very much a reality. We are involved in it and it has a serious bearing on the US and our well being.

Not posting about it or ignoring it will not make it disappear.

By claiming that Velenskyy is illegitimate, Putin is basically admitting that he himself is illegitimate.

"In Ukraine there is still a legislature, and a court system. They still pass laws that Zelensky might not like."

Just because the Chinese communist party sometimes disagrees with Xi does not make it a democracy. In the Ukraine legislators are all from the same party, all other parties being outlawed, courts are politically controlled and nobody gets to vote. Walking down the street gets you kidnapped and thrown at the front lines all while Zelensky's wife shops in Paris.

"Yes! Yes! Nope!
What are you doing?
I guess I should post a similar answer...
Nonsense.
Nonsense.
Total nonsense."

How rhetorically brilliant and intellectually devastating. You are the cream that rises to the top Adorno. /s

"The U.S. set up shop in Germany and France and Italy and all over the world. We set up shop in Iraq and in Afghanistan. We set up shop where we're needed."

Do you realize that you are describing to perfection a predatory empire? Past I checked empires are not into democracy because the core citizenry, Americans, don't want to be enslaved to support imperial ambitions and the illegal and legal aliens the empire imports hates the natives and are more than happy to shaft them.

You apparently want us enslaved and impoverished Adorno and people like that are the scum we are fighting against on this forum.

That's a whole lot of krap!

We set up shop after a war is over, and that's to help a country get back on its feet. And we 'get invited back' to help keep the country on a successful path. We don't stay where we're not wanted, unless leaving would lead to war or aggressive takeovers by others.

Empire building is NOT what the U.S. is about, otherwise, we would have conquered the entire world by now and we'd have a worldwide empire. As it stands, the U.S. cannot even control our neighbors, Canada and Mexico, and we even have hostile nations within easy reach of planes and missiles and boats and even walkers with sinister goals. Empire building? Shirly you jest! Predatory? We went into Iraq and, did we decide to take the oilfields for ourselves? Mexico has a huge oil industry, and we've 'failed to take them over'? Why have we not taken over a lot of the world if we are 'predatory'? Shirley you jest. Come up with something better and that makes sense.

You are describing the “white man's burden” philosophy when white people are being colonized, marginalized, and attacked in America and Europe. It is rather stupid of you unless you are a virtue-signaling leftist agitator who is full of krap.

When talking to kids, one has to talk to them in language that they can understand and which they can appreciate. My response to you is about responding in kind, so, intellectually, I was only stooping to your level. Oftentimes, using grown-up language will not get across to the lesser intellectual. It's brilliant to talk to a dog that would appreciate someone that listens and talks to him at his level. Dogs tend to wag their tails when people talk to them in kiddie language. Your kiddie posts demanded language that responded in kind. Brilliant! I must say.

BTW, did someone other than you spell 'brilliant' and 'intellectually' and 'devastating' and 'rhetorically' for you? Because, that's a bit higher up language than your previous post. But, the contents of your posts are still immature and low-level.

Zelensky is no longer president as of 5/20/24.

He is the recognized leader of the country. The parliament or legislature can still decide that, he's no longer welcome as their leader, and they can pass laws that Zelensky may disagree with. How 'bout Putin? Is he the 'lawfully' elected president of Russia, or is that something you don't want to talk about?

Have you noticed that all of the Bidenista Ukraine backers are now calling for censorship on FR? How surprising. These reptiles are nothing but leftist totalitarians who demand that we are silenced so that they can cheer like idiot soccer fans over a war 5000 miles away overseas designed to distract the American people and enrich those that prey upon us.

Make no mistake, people who want to censor you would have no qualms in killing you.

ust because the Chinese communist party sometimes disagrees with Xi does not make it a democracy. In the Ukraine legislators are all from the same party, all other parties being outlawed, courts are politically controlled and nobody gets to vote.

Bunch of krap!

The CCP is the same as Xi. Xi is the same as the CCP. Nobody in China dares to oppose Xi, and Xi controls everything that the CCP says and does. Anybody that dares oppose Xi will never be heard from again.

Is that the same thing that happens in Ukraine? Wartime powers are different from peace-time powers, and right now, Ukraine is at war. Zelensky may have 'dictator-like' powers at the moment, but, how do you know that he will still be 'dictator' after the war? And, if his powers are absolute, why is there still a parliament or legislators who disagree with him? Those legislators should all be in prison or dead if Zelensky has dictator powers, with no opposition allowed.
