I'm wondering if he died in flight and that's why the plane crashed.
It looked like he was trying to do a loop and misjudged the water??

Anders, Lovell and Borman circled the Moon for the first time at Christmas Eve 1968 and read from the Bible: “in the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth . . .’. I will never forget it, riding as a passenger in my family car driving to spend Christmas Day with a brother at a military base before heading for the VN War. God Bless and Godspeed William Anders; from that three man crew, he follows Borman. Lovell is still alive, all got past 90 years old!
