President Joe Biden confirmed on Thursday that he would not pardon his son Hunter Biden, if he was convicted in his gun trial.
The president and the White House have previously claimed Joe Biden would not pardon his own son in the past, but expressed support for Hunter Biden amid the legal battles. Hunter Biden's gun trial, which centers on claims that he lied about his drug addiction status when purchasing a gun in 2018, began on Tuesday.
Joe Biden previously dodged attempts to talk about his son's trial, and did not go into detail in an ABC News interview on Thursday. But responded in the affirmative when asked if he would accept the results of the gun trial. He also said "yes" when asked if he ruled out a pardon for his son.
The commander-in-chief also put out a statement of support for his son on Monday, the day before the trial began, but said he would not be commenting on the trial any further.
“Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us,” the president said, The Hill reported. “A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean. As the President, I don’t and won’t comment on pending federal cases, but as a Dad, I have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength.”
Joe Biden also commented on former President Donald Trump's hush money trial, and said Trump was trying to subvert the rule of law. Trump was convicted last week on 34 felony counts of falsifying his business records to hide the hush money payment.
"He's trying to undermine it," the president told ABC News. "He got a fair trial. The jury spoke."
