The Dominion War
In the First Dominion War, a group of wannabe dictators looking to "fundamentally change" the Federation pretended to be on the side of the several federated states of the union, appealing to their sense of stability and "adults in charge."
Once they gained the confidence of the majority of the people, however, they soon shifted to their true shapes and installed an army of loyal shock troops to destabilize the cities and local governments of the federation. Their defeated first wave of shock troops were easily replaced by an assembly line of newly indoctrinated young replacements, who eagerly went out to battle the federation in the name of "hope and change" - it was their calling to do so and to ask why is why the Federation must be defeated.
The Federation decided to release a virus to turn the tide of the war, but the virus was more potent than they realized and hostilities ceased all across the world. Opportunists emerged to take advantage of the vacuum caused by the virus, claiming to be the ultimate solution to save the Federation from extinction. Wild claims were made to scare the people of the Federation into acquiescence, and quick cures were offered to those who joined the side of righteousness.
The Dominion was eventually defeated, but a new dominion emerged that profited off of the devastation of the virus and asserted control of the Federation. They claimed their authority from the way they conducted themselves during the worst of the strife, being the more unifying alternative to the masses. Through trickery and deceit, this new dominion was given control of the Federation by its citizens.
Over time, it became apparent that the new dominion rulers were really more shape shifters and reverted back to their wannabe dictator tendencies, only now from inside of the Federation. They destroyed all federated border controls, they destroyed the economy, they destroyed the rule of law for everyone but themselves, they destroyed the education of the children, they funded and armed the enemies of the Federation, and they let loose a new wave of shock troops on the cities of the Federation.
This time it was not the indoctrinated soldiers of the past who were let loose on the people, but the uneducated adolescents of the present who were raised with no boundaries, no guidance towards adulthood, and no authority figures to punish bad behavior when they went astray. These feral dogs of war, who were given no skills or tools to successfully guide themselves to a long and prosperous Federation life, were instead encouraged by outside agitators aligned with the new Dominion to continue to terrorize Federation citizens who defied the edicts of the New Dominion.
Allies of the New Dominion would foment strife in faraway lands and then use their agitators at home to rally the uneducated youth of the Federation to riot and protest in the cities. New Dominion leaders began publicly supporting the rioters and soon started arresting Federation leaders who spoke out against the New Dominion. Business were told to close accounts with Federation organizations, and courts of law were prosecuting the victims of New Dominion assaults.
