Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., a longtime political moderate, on Friday announced he is leaving the Democratic Party and has registered as an independent.

In a statement, Manchin, who is not running for re-election, said he switched his party affiliation at the West Virginia State Capitol.

"From my first day in public service in 1982, I have always focused on doing what’s best for my state and my country, without regard to party or politics. Throughout my days in elected office, I have always been proud of my commitment to common sense, bipartisanship and my desire to bring people together. It’s who I am. It’s who I will always be. I have never seen America through a partisan lens," Manchin said.

He's retiring at the end of the year. I suspect he'll still caucus with the Rats.

He had to retire, either that or face certain defeat in November. In 2018, as the incumbent, he got less than 50% of the vote and came within 3% of being defeated. WV is way more red now, he is the only Dem left holding a statewide office.

Goodbye Joe!

I think he sees a wave coming and wants to try and cement his legacy as anything other than a Devilcrat.

Of course. Otherwise, he'd just become a Republican.

Rush always said if you are an independent, you are in the middle of the road, and all you’ll get is Run Over! He said there are no great independents. But maybe this is the first step for Manchin, and maybe he will join us.

He is a registered fool. Throughout his career he as a Democrat did incredible harm to the American people and the American nation. He ought to be in prison and repent for his crimes.

No matter...he left the Dems one Senator short....so we’ll see what he does...Sounds like telling the Dems...”You don’t own me”.

Why do Manchin’s statements always sound so trite that they seem to be written by the staff of the Babylon Bee?

Interesting thing is that the Dems now only hold 47 seats as a Party.

There’s a rumor that Manchin is going to jump into the WV Governor’s race, problem is the primary has already occurred and there is a Republican and Democrat candidate for Governor already chosen. So, he would have to run as an independent, while neither the Democrat and Republican candidates are particularly exciting (the democrat is a virtual unknown and the Republican, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is fine, but about as exciting as watching paint dry) I still don’t see Manchin winning, he would basically have to get every democrat to abandon the party nominee and would still need a healthy share of Republican voters to also abandon Morrissey to win.

Being provocative and giving people things to think about costs you votes. If a politician can get away with being bland and saying as little as possible, he will.
