Alan Dershowitz and Harmit Dillon both said that appealing in NY state will be impossible for Trump to win and the Supreme Court appeal is years off IF they take the case. All of it will occur long after the election. Sentencing is in July a few days before the Republican convention. All according to plan.
Trump has had good success in the NY state courts. He will be at large pending his appeal regardless of Merchan's sentence. It would be even more embarassing if they continue this charade after he becomes President-elect. If NY's top court let's this stand, and appeal can be taken to SCOTUS. If they decline jurisdiction then, Trump will file a habeas corpus case in U.S. District Court somewhere and then it goes up the federal appellate courts that way. Congress can also act to deny state court's jurisdiction over federal election law, etc.

Won’t happen until after the election. He will run as a convicted criminal, and millions of people who otherwise would have voted for him, becoming recent converts politically, will stay home.

The state is under no legal obligation to release Trump from custody or house arrest, even if he’s somehow elected in November. There’s no legal mechanism for springing him just to assume office.
