How much poison do you need in a gallon of water to consider the water to be poisonous?

“a clerk there watching everyone and helping.”

20 items or less is ignored a lot.

I’ve talked to one. He is not allowed to interfere. Dunno about calling the cops if the person is shoplifting..

Every store in San Francisco is self-checkout. At least for 13% of the population.

*In today’s episode of “how 13% of a nation’s population is enough to destroy the rest of it” …*

You talkin’ bout blacks?

I once heard locks are in place to keep honest people honest. There are cultures where you don’t function without lying and stealing. Some places it involves survival.

Diversity is a strength.

“Not only are stores today removing self-checkouts but they’re removing all the courtesy exits.”

Stores in these lawless areas should all go to an online order/pay, pick up at store model. No customers allowed in the merchandise area.

Using a self-check out one time, I got back to the car and realized I forgot to scan the case of beer that was under my carriage. Like a good doobie, I went back in there to try and pay for it. I went to one of the cashiers to explain and she had to call over her front end manager as she did not know how to handle the situation. The front end manager scratched his head and brought in the store manager who looked at me like I had two heads. He brusquely asked me where the case of beer was. I said that I left it in my car as I did not want to lug it all the way back into the store - I just wanted to pay for it and be on my way.

He then told me, like I was an idiot, that I had to bring the case of beer back into the store so that the bar code could get scanned properly and stalked off, leaving me with the front end manager and the cashier. The front end manager suggested that I just go home with the beer and maybe scan the item twice next time I was in there buying it.

Bottom line, nobody really seemed to care all that much. So why should I?

“they’re removing the kiosks because of problems with theft “

And there it is. Society crumbles because of the worst of us

Yay for them. Since I do not work in any of these such stores I refuse to check out my own stuff. Might, if they offered a +10% discount.
I’ve told store clerks/etc that if I come in and only self-checkout is available I will drop my selected items there and walk out — and get everything from Amazon from then on.

Fareway, a regional grocery store in Iowa/Midwest does that. I think they ask you if you’d like that or not. It’s not mandatory.

Back when I was just out of college (1980s) I saw a tee shirt that said, “Welcome to Iowa, please turn your clocks back 20 years.”

Brookshires stores in East Texas carry out. Excellent customer service there. My son worked there in high school. I lived in Boston Mass. for two years in the nineties. Quite different there. No help with take out. You rolled your cart into a pen outside the store where pipe bollards blocked you from rolling your grocery cart to your car. You had to go get your car and drive it closer to where you could unload your cart. Shopping with a friend mandatory ... if you left your cart unattended, you might be light some steaks. etc. by the time you fetched your car.

There’s just a big empty space where the self-checkout kiosks used to be.

There are also marks on the floor where the machines used to sit.

In their place is a display of orange soda cans

I expect that in the not too distant future, stores will return to the 19th/early 20th century practice where customers will pull their wagon (vehicle) up to a loading dock and hand a clerk their list. The clerk will assemble their purchase, and after receiving payment, load it in the wagon (vehicle).

There will be no need for the customer to enter the establishment and no risk of theft.

that’s a state law and I think it’s 940 under is a misdemeanor and the cops don’t want to be bothered with “minor” crimes.

I want to go back to waiting in line while the woman ahead of me and the checker discuss her grandkid’s new tooth or we wait for the manager to approve a check. Or I wait with a half gallon of milk while the person in front of me has 200 items. I like self check at Walmart and Stater Bros. And i never wait in line. I like self check at Walmart and Stater Bros. And i never wait in line.

The question i have is with two employees in the self check area how much money is the store actually saving?

San Francisco is desperately seeking to avoid the downside of it’s
Left leaning lunatics. I’d say ignore them. Close. Pay the fine.
