School probably felt it was safer to not put teachers in the way of being killed while teaching literature that might offend people with little impulse control and unwillingness to allow societal restrictions on their behavior.
What about all the popes, cardinals and archbishops that Dante depicts as inhabiting the lower regions?
Most teachers would offer at least one alternative novel to read if the main one is objectionable. Better to provide a choice vs letting them skip the whole class period and assignments.
Hearing things you don’t like and not reacting violently is part of what getting an education is all about!
