Nobody looks good in this case, including the owner.
His dogs were not properly secured. One of his 2 dogs dug a hole near the fence. That little blind dog escaped through that openi. Conclusion: the owner did not have his dogs properly fenced and adequately secured. So very likely, his blustery lawsuit vs the police is going nowhere.

Consider all the pets, even within the home, the cops have murdered.

Was the owner with the dog, or did the owner let this blind and deaf dog wander?

And so what if the dog was wandering? How is a 13 pound blind, deaf dog a threat?

It had no collar or tags, either.

At least our dogs at home had tags, when they wandered, and neighbors knew they were ours.

One of the changes that really needs to come in America is reverting police officers into looking professional. They look like an armed rabble, or like an occupying militia. In more wealthy departments they literally look like a platoon of infantry, complete with helmets, green uniforms, plate carriers with A.R. 15 magazine all across the front. They will never get the respect they crave until they start acting like Adam 12 again.

It is a stray and eligible for being handled as a stray.

Oh, well that completely changes everything if the Shih Tzu didn’t have a collar you need to blast them with a Glock several times. And for God sakes, don’t let him lick your hand or entice you into petting him.

OK, so in your esteemed opinion, that means being shot? In most cases, it means being taken to a shelter.

Well, we are so glad you are so perfect. Your clear implication is that the little elderly 13 pound blind, deaf, doggy had it coming. Real big of ya.

Excellent summation on your part.

I get that policing is difficult work. But a certain percentage of cops live for the escalation. If level 2 behavior is appropriate, they’ll go to level 5.

These stupid cops are driving a wedge between the police and honest citizens. Difficult times are ahead. That wedge will make things even more difficult.

So the cop made a mistake about an anima. Can’t we cut him some slack with our outrage?

Do you believe strays can be killed, or not?

The town has no animal control.

I guess the automobile hasn’t yet arrived in little Missouri towns. We live in a town of 700 and would never let our dog roam.

Well said. If you dress like an occupying army, soon you will start acting like an occupying army.

As I noted elsewhere, policing is difficult work. And it gets more difficult daily thanks to insane Democrat policies. But my goodness. The police have got to put way more effort into building bridges with honest folks.

A check of police-related posts here on Free Republic will show that many folks are now very suspicious of the police. And FR is a law-and-order site… so that’s saying something.

With all due respect, ConservativeMind, the key word there is “can”. Can a stray dog be killed by the police? I guess so, especially when the dog is acting aggressively.

But in this case, *should* the dog have been killed? Not at all.

The best thing that can be said about the cop is that he made a very poor decision. In killing that dog he widened the gap between the police and honest people - people who won’t soon forget this incident.

“Earning the hate” might not apply here. But unfortunately, it comes close.

Since when to cops shoot strays?

I’ve heard too many stories of them not gunning down a pit bull that was seen actively attacking another animal or person.

And yet this loser does a small dog like that?

That said, the owner was negligent to let a dog that incapacitated roam at all. Be responsible and keep it under your eye and control.
