The doomsday glacier is undergoing "vigorous ice melt" that could reshape sea level rise projections

The massive "doomsday glacier" known for its rapid destabilization is undergoing a "vigorous ice melt" that scientists say could reshape sea level rise projections.

In a new study, glaciologists from the University of California, Irvine, found that warm, high-pressure ocean water is seeping beneath West Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier, making it more vulnerable to melting than previously thought. The glacier is roughly 80 miles across, the widest on Earth. It packs so much ice that if it were to completely collapse, it could singlehandedly cause global sea levels to rise by more than two feet, according to the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, prompting its moniker as the "Doomsday Glacier."

Yeah, a two foot sea level rise pretty much zeros out the Florida Keys.

Rush used to say: "Run the numbers" whenever the lefties made absurd statements. I heard him first say that regarding the rain forest. We are losing Brazilian rainforest at the equivalent of an area the size of Montana every year, was the specific issue. as I recall.

Regarding the ocean: 139.5 million sq. miles (361 million square km.)of ocean cover the earth's surface.

At two feet of rise and 640 acres per square mile you would have (640x2) x 139.5m = 178,560 billion acre ft. of water.

and going further: 325,000 (rounding off) gallons per acre foot, gives us: 58,000 Trillion gallons

The comment is beyond absurd.

Earth is a self correction ecological system.

If this really becomes a disaster it means A-holes like John Kerry, Bill Gates etc have seeded the upper atmosphere to 'save mother earf' and were too stupid to consider unintended consequences - and killed all of us.

LOL. And if a hostile alien race invaded earth, they'd wipe out humanity. Let's stay up late at night worrying about both.

Yes, the Lake Bonneville flood, caused by collapse of an ice dam that released water that was held behind it. Kind of a different situation.

I predict there will be numerous terrorist attacks in the US before either of Obama’s waterfront mansions are flooded.

GLOBAL sea levels to rise two feet because of a glacier collapse? I can't be the only one who thinks that's a load of baloney. It's simply not logical. In any case, the glacier won't "completely" collapse. That's just fear mongering. Glaciers gain and retreat, gain and retreat. Always been that way.
