Final four: Trump drops four names when asked about highly anticipated vice presidential pick

In a campaign stop in the Bronx, New York, former President Donald Trump named some of his possible vice presidential picks, a sign the list may be shortening.

In an interview with News 12 New York, Trump singled out Dr. Ben Carson, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as top options on a list that has continued to grow.

“We have so many,” Trump said when asked about picks for vice president. “You could take people like Ben Carson, people like Marco Rubio, or J.D. Vance. I mean, there’s so many. Elise is doing a fantastic job, but I could go on for quite a long time. We have many people who would do a really fantastic job.”

When asked about the timeline, Trump said he would make a decision “sometime during the convention,” which is when presidential nominees typically announce their vice president. Trump has floated all of these names as picks for various reasons.

I think Trump just amuses himself putting out VP rumors. None of it is serious information.

Picking DeSantis violates the 12th Amendment's rule about state delegates can't be both for prez and vice prez if they both live in that state.

Exactly. And that's why it won't be DeSantis or Rubio. People can argue whether or not such a pairing would be constitutionally acceptable but does Trump really want to gear up for another serious challenge to the election should he win (on top of the multiple other legal challenges he is certain to face)?

Anyhow, DeSantis for AG.

That’s correct.
But, the VP numbers aren’t included in the Electoral vote.
They are meaningless.

That is good to know. I thought the electors didn’t count at all and was wondering about Kennedy and his VP from California as well.

I’m guessing none of the above. 🙄

Doubt Carson has Presidential ambitions. He would be an excellent transition to the next generation of MAGA supporters.

Trump will have a say on who will be the 2028 nominee. Having Carson as VP with no presidential ambitions will liberate them both to make the needed tough decisions. I would assign Carson to take on the project to resurrect our cities. His experience as HUD Secretary will serve him in good stead.

The electoral votes for vice president do count. They are not meaningless.

The electors cast two ballots.. One is for their choice for president, and one for their choice for vice president.

Please review the 12th Amendment.

I didn't know that. So you're saying that if Trump picked DeSantis or Rubio for VP, FL could handle it by having someone else as Trump's VP on the ballot? Thus, the electoral votes from FL could still go for Trump?

“ It will be a surprise pick, not any of the four he mentioned.”

Maybe. But, of those four, Vance would be the most reliable IMHO.

Just thought about Dr Carson, this morning.
A good, decent man.

Rubio was born in the United States, but his parents did not become American citizens until after his birth. Hence he’s not a Natural Born Citizen of the United States.

Still young but Bryon Donald looks good to me, and he has been at almost every rally, and feriously defends Trump.

Well now, if we want to get into the issues of Natural Born citizenship, that subject has been discussed many many times here on Free Republic.

And there is no consensus among Freepers as to what natural born citizenship means.

Thanks Dilbert.
I was not clear.
The electoral votes for VP are just that...for VP.
The candidate who wins the POTUS electoral vote \still\ becomes POTUS.

The fallout on the VP-vote can be resolved Constitutionally (succession).

Good point. So if Trump were to pick DeSantis or Rubio for VP, I guess technically the FL GOP could put someone else's name as the Republican VP on their ballots. But the problem with that strategy is, end the end when all EC votes from all states are counted, then we could end with Trump for prez and a Dim for VP (if the Dim VP won a majority of EC votes from other states, or if the Dim-controlled Senate picked the Dim VP as per the Senate picking VP when there's no majority from EC votes).

So in the end, we're still talking about it being very unwise for Trump to pick a fellow Floridian for VP.
