UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is shortly expected to call a snap general election for July 4, sources say, with his Conservative party facing an uphill struggle to extend its 14 years in power.
Sunak was required to hold a vote by January 2025, and had long resisted calls to be specific about his plans. But a fall in inflation rates, announced on Wednesday, provided the backdrop for the announcement, due to be made outside Downing Street.
The decision will fire the starting gun on a six-week campaign that, currently, is almost universally expected to conclude in the demise of Sunak’s Conservative government.

This will not go well. July 4th was the day they lost America, and it may be the day they lose their nation for good, to Labor and Islamist MPs take over.
Interesting. I wonder how is projections compare with Trudeau—who presently has a strong minority government. At the moment, Trudeau is projected to be reduced to about 20% of the total seats, with the Conservatives projected to win a record-number of seats for them.
That, however, will be nowhere close to the record Canadian wipeout—Kim Campbell went from a majority to fifth-party statues, with less than 1% of the seats (2).
While it won’t go well, timing could make the difference between 25-30% of the seats and 10-15% of the seats.
As we don’t have the option of seeing how things go in alternate universes, we will never know for sure.

Talking about the UK.
I get that, but have you checked out the options in U.S. or Canada of late? People in glass houses are not well-positioned to throw stones.
At least Canada’s conservatives have nominated the first person since Harper that has a set of speeds that includes “going to hell more slowly”, which is the most that one probably can realistically expect, at least in my life-time (I was born in 1970).
Looks like Trump is freaking out the UK’s Deep State, too.

The UK has the same problems we do: It is now run by its Deep State. Its elections are a sham (check out the recent tech buys and the changes to election law in the UK since 2016). The letter after a polls name means bugger all there, too. And the vast majority of the UK’s pols are Deep State. The country Brexited in name only, and the UK is being made to pay for that the same way ours is making us pay for voting for MAGA.
But the UK’s greatest problem is that they don’t have a Trump standing between them and their out of control Deep State. And the UK needs someone like that. NOW.

That doesn’t surprise me—I assume to the right primarily fiscally.
I bet the conservatives have drifted so far to the centre that it is easier to run to their right on some issues than the left.
In countries that don’t have the world’s reserve currency as their currency, fiscal realities do have a way of reigning things in. In Canada it is typical to have at least the fiscal promises of the two largest parties run well to the right of what the U.S. Senate Republicans will actually deliver when commanding a majority, and not unusual for them to deliver. Trudeaux fiscally will try to govern to the right of what the GOPe will actually deliver. Think about that.
There is basically NO difference in the two parties. But the UK Government is MUCH bigger than ours.

Case in point: The NHS is the UK’s largest employer, public or private, in the UK.
The quality of the medical care the NHS provides sucks.
And good luck finding out what percentage of NHS employees actually see patients.
If the UK’s Deep State continues to screw with elections, Reform, if it’s legit, won’t stand a chance.
